i would use MURS. and, i wouldn't worry about the legalities of the power and using a type certified radio. who cares, honestly? get a nice 2m mobile and MARS mod it and then get a business band antenna and you're in business. :thumbup1:
the military has the old warlock systems and the newer CVRJ's and DUKE systems. they all do the same thing which is scramble frequencies. they use them in Iraq to scramble cell freqs for the ied's that are cell initiated. although, they are meant for cell freqs, they can be adjusted to work...
more than likely if he is hiking, there will be no cell or internet service so aprs would be useless. i do recommend a HT as a first time ham. welcome to the forum.
i've had 3 different magnum radios over the years and i've never had any more noise out of them than any other radio? i think grounding might have been an issue. :thumbup1:
there's a guy who runs one of the stargun model antenna's in my town. his radio always sounds top notch. however, his antenna is just a basic coil design, not one of the mobile beams.
if i post an amp for sale on ebay, the police snatch it in less than an hour. happens every time, but i see blatantly obvious 11 meter amps reach the end of their auctions and it makes me wonder why? i never make any reference to cb's or 11 meter in the auctions and they still get pulled.
