No problem, I wish you luck on getting your radio working. I agree, these things can't hold a candle to the other Ranger/Superstar stuff... If you like running FM, though, they aren't half-bad.
Just an idea, you might want to check for a cold solder joint where the new crystal was installed...
I have one of these radios, and have the opposite problem; the receiver works very well, but the transmit is pretty bad. It's either 30 percent modulation or way over-modulated on AM if I adjust the modulation via the internal pot... FM works great, though!
The board in the radio was made by...
FM (NBFM) works GREAT on 160 meters! I run it on 1.992 Mc all the time as it really sounds good and cuts through the "line noise" and atmospheric static better than SSB. At least out to 100 miles or so.
Lots of folks ran FM on HF before SSB got popular back in the early 1960s. Lots of the...
Thanks Loosecannon!
I've got the upgrade parts ordered from Mouser, and I went ahead and ordered replacement electrolytics for the whole thing due to the age of it.
I re-crystaled and aligned it for 10 meters yesterday, and have made a few good contacts there. I talked to a guy on 29.050...
Yep, I'd have to vote for anything with the EPT3600 chassis. (General Lee, Connex 3300, etc. including my favorite - the SuperStar 3900)
Now for really nice, clean sounding AM, I vote for the Uniden export dual-conversion SSB chassis. (President Grant Classic/George, etc.)
Of course...
Thanks for the noise limiter resistor information! You are probably right, Cobra must have got a FANTASTIC deal on those resistors...
I'll definitely do some experimenting and fine tuning. I live in the middle of the city, and the interference is severe. So, anything I can do to improve noise...
Here's what I have.... Good luck with the mod; this seems to be a really nice transceiver! 8)
FT – 450 Wideband Transceive Modification
1. Disconnect the power form the radio.
2. Remove the front panel & the large RF shield to access the CONTROL PCB.
3. Locate the solder...
Thanks!!!
I really appreciate the help, Loosecannon!
I wired-up the ANL/NB switch a few minutes ago. Thanks to your precise instructions, I am now able to get rid of most of that $%%*@ AC line noise that ruins my reception while using this Cobra. :D
BTW, are you by any chance a school...
I finally got around to working on a Cobra 139XLR (base station) "EBay Special" that was supposed to "work fine," but didn't...
I've just about got everything straightened out (new channel LED, final and driver, LED meter bulbs, etc.) except one thing… Sometime in my radios distant past...
I appreciate the replies, y'all. Right now, I've relegated the Cobra to the "shelf of shame" that contains all of the "problem" gear.... I'll get to checking out the ALC and driver circuits when I am a little less aggravated.
DX Hound, I'd really appreciate it if you would let me know what...
I was talking on this radio a few minutes ago, and lost high power on SSB. One minute it was peaking at about 100 watts, and the next moment, it dropped back to about 20. On low power, the radio still puts out about 16 or so watts. I've never done anything to the radio other than the frequency...
I'm partial to my President Grant Classic export. I use a Heil HC-5 Microphone element in the stock hand microphone case, and have good, clear audio with that combination. It is also very loud!
