    What in the hail!

I just finished re-installing my solar and antennas after getting a re-roof. Lots of work. In the yard I keep the pieces of my old home built 20M moxon as a reminder of the storm that turned it into a pretzel. Man I miss that antenna. A few weeks ago a huge hail storm just missed us but was...

HAM/CB operators ... how old are you?

    62. Started with CB HT from Radio Shack when I was 12. Learned electronics and computers and had a great life. Today I was trying to cancel my Charter/Spectrum Internet service and they kept me on the phone with some kind of interrogation / marking call for 15 minutes at a wack. Finally...

    How to: push-up masts

SOLAR STORM hit here at EM00. Either that or all my antennas just failed. Oh well things will be better than ever on 10 once the storm passes.

If you were a pirate broadcaster, what's playing right now?

I saw these bands in concert. Awesome.

    How to: push-up masts

You can see from my pictures that the huge push up mast, I think it is an H50, allows me to work from about 20 feet up in the air. Even with that and the light weight rotator and 10M Moxon it was a serious workout to put that thing up all the way. Basically I get up on the roof, put down an...

    How to: push-up masts

10M Moxon is back up and on the air about 40ft up. Nice workout getting that last few feet "pushed up" in the air. A couple of weeks ago I had to take everything down including solar panels in order to get a new roof installed. A trick that I learned a while back; Look straight up the mast when...

    How to: push-up masts

Okay keep us updated on that antenna work. Here is a pic from today of me putting the discone up 24 feet above the roof top. Previously I had a big 2 meter colinear antenna on the top but it did not see much use after I put up the satellite array. This setup is on an old tripod that I was using...

    How to: push-up masts

It is hard. I have used the big Rohn push up masts for a long time like since the 1980s along with Rohn25 tower. The last time that I pushed up the 20M Moxon I had help and that was a couple of years ago but the weather turned it into a pretzel so on the ground it stays. That was too big and...

    Push Up Antenna Masts

Shipping is crazy expensive. I found my Rohn 25 and the push up mast on Craigslist. Also our neighbor had a push up mast laying on the ground so I have that up in the air also. Recently I looked at a few sections of craigslist Rohn25 but it ended up being cut and dropped so I took a pass...

    Push Up Antenna Masts

I have the big Rohn push up mast with an RCA rotator and 10M Moxon. It has a house bracket, 3 sets of guys x4 ways and I only put it up 32FT. Now it has handled all of the big storms with no trouble but like others have said; PITA.

    Base antenna 2m/70cm/murs/gmrs

I have a Discone for the scanner but it can also be used to transmit. It is my highest antenna. Second down I have 2m/70cm vertical that is going to the FT-847. Don't know about the other bands but would put up at least two antennas if I was looking for that coverage.

Worldwide DX Forum more civilized than QRZ

I quit visiting QRZ when they started the censorship. Life is too short for that environment.

Having some SWR trouble with the MFJ 1890 10 meter moxon

My 10M Moxon is good at nulling out loud stations and when pointing it at weak stations is helpful but it is only 2 elements right? This Moxon is my wife's favorite antenna so I spend the time and effort to make it close to perfect. The antenna is on it's own push up mast, I think 33ft up on top...

8ft Grounding rod: copper or galvanized

Here is how I grounded my tower and push up masts. About every 5 years I have refreshed the grounds on the masts by taking it all apart then cleaning and re-greasing. This year I used 'cold galvanizing compound' aka spray on zinc since I had a lot of rust forming...

8ft Grounding rod: copper or galvanized

I have a lifetime of experience with this stuff at work and home. Follow the NEC250, follow what the commercial cable and radio people do with tower grounding so when that electrical storm comes everything that you care about is tied to the ground system and that will keep everything at the...
