    First ham base

Nothing for nothing, just happened upon a Kenwood ts 790a, with another radio, mjf(?) antenna tuner, and power supply w/ battery for $300. Seems like a good price for all....maybe too cheap? Didn't the 790 go for $1600-1800??

    First ham base

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. As you pretty much can tell, I'm figuring on starting on the kiddie side of the pool, but know that starting with a good low end unit is better than going the export cb route. And knowing that antennas are the real key is a plus side for me, as that...

    First ham base

Thanks Riverman,. Been doing some checking around, and if course have found the typical blizzard of offerings for used equipment. Being more than a little long in the tooth to start in a new thing, my general plan was to start with a fairly wideband Omni and my 148 gtl, and add to that a ham...

    First ham base

So getting ready to take first dive into ham waters....... looking for some input as to good initial base, preferably one could grow into and a more old school type of unit. Don't need bells and whistles.

    1)2 wave vertical dipole

Strikes me now I probably should have posted in the cb antenna section, my bad haven't been around for a while

    1)2 wave vertical dipole

My info and research to date sez that I shouldn't need a choke or balun, as the antenna should be about 75 ohms, with a 50 ohm feed. Is that about right?? Nothing fancy, just straight ole 11 m dipole, right?

    1)2 wave vertical dipole

Thanks for the input ....I was planning on 11 m to start out. Had thought about dissimilar metals, but figured if I used stainless turnbuckles and thick wire and soldered the wire to the buckle it would probably work. The other end of the buckle would be insulators, top to a pulley, and bottom...

    1)2 wave vertical dipole

So I'm thinking of setting up a cheap easy base at the house, and have been researching starting with 1/2 wave vertical dipole. If my figuring is right, the dipole will top out right around 800 feet in elevation, with the base about 10' off the ground, and top about 30 feet up in a pine tree off...

    Base New base antenna

Undertaker..I live in the northeast and have been thinking about that tornado, is it rugged? We haven't had severe winters for a bunch of years now, but like anything else that will change. I've been using a sirio 5000 on my truck, and am impressed, would like to get similar results from a base...

    A question on whips...

Kind of have to agree with Greg here, have had my 102 whip since the seventies on many different vehicles, always with swivel base and spring. Swr almost always about 1.4-5:1, setup on my ram with breedlove mount and an extender.......102 plus 4 for spring plus about 2 for extender.....swr came...

    Maybe......just maybe

Ok, that makes sense. As a matter of fact, that's how I have my setup now, but the idea struck me, but as I had never heard anyone mention it or discuss it specifically figured can't hurt to ask. Only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask. Thanks guys ...73s.

    Maybe......just maybe

Figured maybe I'd route I through my stereo....free amplifier!!! Point is, these guys run in ground circuit of coax, yes??? Just wondering.

    Maybe......just maybe

Alright guys, was thinking the other day. Always talk about grounding to binding etc for good antenna performance. Has anyone ever used lightning protection so239 couplers, and bolted/ welded the to car/ truck frame, body, etc. Dawned on me this might be an idea. Don't figure the would be a lot...

    Mobile Ram 1500 antenna

Yeah, see you have the ram box, if you look at mine you won't have to remove the plastic, the bullring setup uses a router bit with bearing, and a small sawblade, when you're done the stake pocket hole is perfectly cut, and the breedlove with the 4vdegree angle makes antenna sit nice and...

    Mobile Ram 1500 antenna

My breedlove mount was excellent, got a passthrough with so239 for the whip, and another for the base of the sirio. Think the mount was like 1 3/4" or so I length. Bullring makes a kit to cut the plastic cover on the bed, cheap and works great with a standard router. I sent pic of 192 whip with...

    Mobile Ram 1500 antenna

Can send in newer photos if you'd like. The 102 with the spring tuned in real well with a 2-3" extension....swr almost flat

    Mobile Ram 1500 antenna

Hey Nick, I have a 2012 ram and am using a breedlove pocket mount (4 degree) with a sirio performer be 5000. Coax runs inside bed and into compartment under rear seat thru existing plug. Have a low garage, so works fine getting under 7 foot door. Swr is at 1.1:1---1.4:1 after tuning, have yet to...

    President John Q

Thanks Robb, good to know.Whats the chances that the channel selector is fudged up enuff to affect the led display? This unit has been obviously sitting around in a poor environment, but everything xcept the led seems to work, it was hard to make out whether the segments were dim or not when I...
