Holy Crap Danzik!
that's the first time ive seen another Eagle VIII in over 20 years!
Its the only other example ive ever seen really.
For the benefit of the forum, and future searchers, can you take some internal pics?
Close ups of the PC boards tops and bottoms would be beneficial for me...
thanks to both of you for the replies!
Looks like i saved some money at least LOL.
Ranch55, are those the chokes you are using for replacements in texas stars?
also, knowing that you've done a lot of work on these amps, have you ever seen R5 and R6 removed?
LC
Hi all,
I've had to replace these before, but it's been a couple of years now, and apparently they are not available right now.
So i found these JW miller chokes and am hoping to use them as alternates...
this stuff will soften the glue so you can remove it.

it's best to unsolder the components so you can get all the glue out.
it likes to hide underneath things you cant see.

great perspective being given in this thread!
i'd like to say that anyone who hasn't clicked on the Adam Savage video in Brandon's post is missing out!
that video is F@#&ing FASCINATING!
LC
Agreed!
I interview people for this type of job and it is amazing to me what the kids who come out of college DON'T know about electronic and mechanical systems.
Ive recently had someone with an electrical engineering degree not be able to tell me the difference between a stator and a rotor!

trying to fight automation is a losing battle.
can anyone think of one time in history where technology was eschewed in favor of tradition?
it never happens.
This is John Henry all over again, and all the people who work in trades like horse-shoeing, and wagon repair had better start looking...
thanks for the reply.
I think your problem is with the radio, the power supply supplying the radio, or the power supply in the amp.
what power supply are you using for the radio?
has the radio had any mods done?
do you have a way to check the input SWR? (SWR meter in the radio would give you...
AK321, your statement is a bit confusing.
you stated the drive to the amp in PEP numbers which are peak modulated power, and then noted the deadkey coming out of the amp.
i think you had the deadkey on your radio set at 5 watts, and then tried 2 watts.
what is the deadkey set at on the radio...
you said the amp was new, but mentioned the previous owner.
did you mean that it was new to you?
also, a 5 watt deadkey is too much for the two pill section of that amp.
try it with a 2 watt deadkey and see if that improves anything.

Listen PP you're going to have to get some thicker skin if you want to play radio.
Im just messin' with ya! and so was Jeff.
I'll listen to the show, but it would be good if you could post freqs and times here.
even if it has to be short notice, it's better than guessing.
LC
Hey 399,
I might have some old info from Ralph around here.
I'll look tonight.
I think i remember Nomad talking about Ralph's novel way of feeding the counter on the 858 chassis, so he probably has some info about it.
LC
well i would say the most likely culprit is the radio itself.
it's got to be at least 30 years old at this point. it's not unheard of for a radio to start having strange issues after being "alive" this long.
do you have another radio you can try in order to eliminate the rest of your equipment...
