i will only cover a mobile application here and recommend the diamond nr22l. great antenna if you don't mind the height. i bought mine second hand on ebay so i have no idea where you might find one.

a galaxy 959 can be had from sparky's with a tune for the sum of around $125. can't beat that with a stick. and, get the 959, not the 949. simply having the freq counter means alot, IMHO.

go on ebay and check out the vhf/uhf ht's from manufactures like puxing, wouxun, fiedaixan, quanshen, ect. great stuff for cheap. or, there are always deals on the ZED for used ht's.
