I've used on on my cargo van for years, it works alot better than the Firestik 5'. It tuned up easy and I work DX with it.
Not bad and the price is right.

Making the circuit boards seems like half the project, I guess you could have good luck etching as long as you have a good pattern.
Your right tubes are not mobil friendly, but their's nothing better than a pair of 572's or 4-811A's just pushing away.
One thing to consider when your...
HUH ! Ok how about this.
Don't add any type of filtering so you can transmit harmonics all the way across the band. Oh HUH heres another one you can do. Make sure you overdrive your homebrewed amp with some sort of pre-driver circuit so you saturate the transistors AKA Pills to the state of...
If you can buy the pre manufactured circuit boards you've got half the project licked, or even if you buy the pre-assembled amplifier boards from Asia stick them in a very ugly aluminum box with some cheep switches undersized wires and stick some decals on them you could be called a amp builder...
The best Am radio antenna that i've found is the older car antennas from the 60's 70's that are telescopic and long. They work real good compared to the new combo AM/FM antenna. These will help for daytime AM radio, for nighttime the smaller the antenna the better because of the noise levels...
The orbital gamma match or gamma fed folded dipoles great idea to overcome the ability to switch polarity on a quad antenna. These were always good antennas for the size, the construction had alot to be desired for they would eventually fall apart. I searched for patent information on these...
The mast will act as a ground, but yes a mobil antenna requires a ground plane at the base of the antenna to work properly. Three nine foot elements would be ideal but not required, 4 1/2 foot would be enough as long as they are 90 deg. from the antenna or they could pull three nine foot wires...
20, 17 and 15 are great DX bands have lots of fun there during the day. I have good luck with a A99 and a tuner on 15 and 17. 40 is a good band too for daytime ragchewing and if you like nets. Tune in and check it out.

The ham beams use the X spreaders mainly for added strength, most are mounted below the booms. I've read that the X pattern will not allow as much ice to build up on the spreaders but I think this is a myth because ice will build no matter how those spreaders are laid out.
The Diamond is the...
Does anyone know if any of the optional filters for the Icom 706MIIG will help the AM recieve. Cause right know with whats stock in the radio sounds like crap and I pick up at least 5 channels each way on AM .???
</p>
We'll I guess since Icom doesn't think its a problem, I guess its not a problem. Its real tough to listen to a AM Ham station (CW Morse) while + - 30kc of SSB are crossing right thru the AM signal. AM narrow filter in the 706MIIG.? Yah its narrow !, Icom stated the narrow filter was ment for FM...
I use a A-99 and a G5RV and talk all over the world. its all in the conditions and your location. A yagi is good a quad is better.
Good luck.
