I have the VX8DR and Icom 92AD. The VX is my goto radio for HT activities centered mostly around public service special events. Just took pictures of the 92 this morning in preparation to sell it. Nothing wrong with it just don't use it so its move on. This area of TX has lots of Dstar repeaters...
It's not an Anytone. Can't say when I 1st noticed static effecting LCD displays. I have been working in the electronic field forever... Now retired so it could have been anytime in the last, well lets just say long time.
Mike
One point sometimes overlooked is the static created when you rubbed the screen to remove the droplets. Breathing on the screen and fogging helps dissipate the static. Pressure can be an issue, but seems to effect screen only when in contact. I can't say for sure that is what is happening, but...
Wrong point of view
Read the subject line and thought if its not leaking its in dry-dock. All ship leak (controlled). Sinking is another story (uncontrolled).
Need more coffee.
Data sheet for a National Semiconductor LM317 does not agree.
Copy and paste page 1 lower left corner.
"†Optional—improves transient response. Output capacitors in the range
of 1μF to 1000μF of aluminum or tantalum electrolytic are commonly used

Best to have D-Star repeaters in your area. 31 is a single band (UHF) analog/dstar, best to go for the 51 which is dual.
HF on HT is so so. Need more antenna than what comes with the radio to be useful and then only for recieve. HT frontend is wide open so its easy for strong, close signals...
Every radio/software combo has its quirks. Does the radio have to be in the clone mode? Another I have run into is "radio in a memory mode instead of VFO mode".
Some USB drivers and operating systems just don't seem to get along.
Good Luck,
Mike
Check your data sheet for the regulator as they usually have fairly complete application notes addressing filtering for ripple (low freq) and stability (high freq).

P.S.
Item 3. Large cap before reg and larger cap after reg with .1 or .01 caps both sides.
I have and use an IC7000 from time to time. Used can be found under 1K. Might be found for less when the IC7100 replacement is in production. Some early report of problems with heat. Not sure that is current. Easy interface to the AH-4a tuner. Layout and menu would be familure.

Looking at the schematic it is difficult to tell.
I believe it is 1.8K.
1. compared to the 10K number the spacing is slightly wider between the 1 and 8.
2. looks to be a hint of a period between the 1 and 8.
3. resulting bias on the transistor is more in line with 1.8 than 18.

I did that mod for a friends radio and it did slow the AGC down and stopped the AGC 'pumping' that was happening on some signals. Nothing negative noted, but I did not operate the radio much after the fix.

No clue and work around known. Likely that some bands benefit using AUTO, but other bands have variable step sizes from end to end and one does not work for all.
Non-modified 8DR
#96 was originally set to AUTO and would not allow your frequencies.
Changed to 5K and no problem.
I think AUTO is the default for that setting as I don't recall every changing it.

One source of 'MUFFLED' can be internal pressure in the Yaesu especially as it warms up during QSO. Try 'burping' the radio by opening the DC input rubber plug and see if the radio sounds better after that. I usually use mine with the speaker mic or secret agent earpiece during public service...
Much better support with the larger surface area on the sma side.
Diamond Antenna makes one that I use on my VX8 and IC92. On the VX8 it screws down flush to the radio and makes good contact. On the IC92 I had to cut a washer from Tygon tubing to fill the gap. Common complaint on the 92 that...
