    rg58 crimping tool ?

I've been crimping BNC's onto RG58 for years and never had any problem with them failing. These are used on VHF taxi radio's TXing 25w. Can't recommend a manufacturer, but I would definitely go for a ratchet type crimper, makes life much easier.

    coax choke info

Booty, I thought you were the guy that was good at digging up the info from the old threads  http://www.worldwidedx.com/cb-antennas/48415-ugly-balun.html You are reading it correctly, for CB it's just the very bottom bar on the graph you need to look at, and it shows 5 turns...

ICOM 706MKllG compared to Yaesu 857d?

I've never used the 857, so I can't make any direct comparisons. A couple of locals here use the 857, and they sound great, they don't seem to have any complaints. I love my MKIIG, it's true home is in the mobile where it is easy to use, has a nice big display and the separation kit makes for...

auto atu with valve amp ??

Your bang on Doc, in this case the size of that pond makes no difference at all, it's the same story over here. good luck with that, most of the tuners I've seen have a 300W power rating, and they aren't what I would call "cheap". If your amp does more than 300W then you have to jump up to...

smaller groundplane for higher feedpoint ??

I've also homebrewed a 5/8ths wave, and I went out of my way to make the radials a 1/4 wave long. A guy whom I respect, and who knows his antenna theory, suggested to me that 8 1/8 wave radials (like on the sirio 827) actually work better, and will give a lower angle of radiation from the...

    wave help

biferi, I'm no expert in propagation, but I think your getting confused with terminology. HF is High frequency, Shortwave band, or whatever you want to call it. HF signals can get from one antenna to another by different methods. Groundwave is where the signal kind of hugs the...

    The "Ugly Balun"

If your tearing stuff up like you say Robb then anything is worth a shot, especially if it is as cheap as just making a few coils out of your coax. I read somewhere that you need a minimum of 10x the antenna impedance for a choke to be effective, so for a 50 ohm antenna, you would need 500 ohms...

    The "Ugly Balun"

the following is just "the way I see things", I've done no testing, just reading. The "ugly balun" or coax choke is just a way to reduce CMC's. It is not a balun, and I agree, if you have no CMC's, it is pointless to add one to your antenna system. Baluns can be designed so they can...

Gizmotchy 2 Meter 4 Element Beam Review

I'm certainly no expert with EZNEC, but I have been playing around with the demo version of the software that is free to download for a couple of months now. It is not as EZ to use as the name suggests, but I have modeled various dipoles, quads and yagi's and been able to achieve the results...

Which mobile antenna should I buy HELP!!!!

I think you answered your own question there. If you can use the 102 on your pickup then use it, you won't find anything that will beat it. If you really want to go for a smaller antenna then the suggestions already made are what you should go for. IMO though, the 10K's I have seen are not much...

    KL - 501

I have a friend that uses one for 11M only and he's quite happy with it. I've compared the schematics to the KL-500 and they are almost identical. The 501 has some LED's to show power output level and an option to use remote keying from your rigs acc socket, these are the only differences I can...

    Rig for mobile/base

Hey Mark, In the past I've always used Yaesu's, but as base only, when I wanted a truly mobile radio that I could also use at home I went for the 706MKIIG, and I wasn't disappointed. Great radio and I couldn't recommend it enough. It takes about 2-3 minutes for me to remove it from the car...
