I am curious if anyone has accomplished this mod or not and how it worked out for you. According to the instructions it allows for expanded receive and High output transmit power (whatever that amount to) but does not open up those frequencies for transmitting. This seems as though it would be...
Thanks... Where I camp there is no cell phone reception etc.. So other HAMS first then emergency freq. got it. However, without doing a Mod will a factory radio even be capable of transmitting on other (emergency) frequencies?
So what about a personal emergency? Hypothetically speaking, say I am camping and a bear chews off part of my leg. (it could happen lol) I tie a tourniquet to slow/stop the bleeding etc. then crawl to my car and access my rig or use my HT throughout the mobile cross band repeater. So I would...
Makes sense... Took TX off the title, what was I thinking? lol
My car stereo is using after market amps in the trunk. So that should keep any interference down right?
Emergencies are a primary reason for me to get into HAM and after many days trying to figure out what type of radio I need/want it occurred to me as I was make a spread sheet of radio features that local emergency and government agencies all transmit on 154-159 and 453-460. Since amateur radios...
You aren't kidding about research. I have spent probably 100hrs surfing the net, posting and reading posts on forums, watching reviews and personal videos and comparing prices. Whew! I am worn out. lol So I basically had it narrowed down to the RCI-2970N2 and the Yeticom. Both are more than I...
King,
Thanks I was looking at them. I am really looking for new only because 1. I have no idea what to look for if the radio has issues and 2.there is no place local to get them fixed, let alone buy one.
One thing I just got done doing was making paper templates for the models I am looking...
Thanks.... and I am still looking. lol. I really like the RCI-2950/RCI-2970. Of these two I would get the 2970 just for the wattage alone. For the same price the Yeticom is still on the table. So far I have not been able to find any bad reports on it. I love the look and the size will fit nicely...
Disregard the Magnum 257HP... I just read through the long thread and it seems that so many have had issues with the current run that I am not going to bother. Maybe I will choke down $375 for the Yeticom...
Thanks King!
Yes I am going to get my license. No big deal... My wife on the other...
Robb,
You did a review on the Magnum 257HP.... Do you think that would be an affordable way to start? It is $175 less expensive than the Yeticom. I can use it as a CB and for HAM...
Thanks guys! This is becoming a little daunting I must say. Initially my whole idea was to have a good form of emergency communication while camping. I almost immediately ruled out CB due to its limited 4w of output power. Especially after reading an article talking about the myriad of devices...
So i am trying to figure out where to start. I started looking at CB's and 10m then to 2m/440 and now I am back to 10/12m AM/FM/SSB... It seems as though having a radio that will be able to do CB as well as 10/12m will make them more versatile. What are the pros and cons between the two? :pop:
I figured with a population of almost 500k there would be at least one place that sold them. Maybe someone locally will know. I'll try the local club web pages. There are like 15 of them. lol
Well I am trying to google search a shop that sells equipment and all I can find are specifically for businesses. Does anyone know of a place locally or should I just order from the Internet?
Thanks! I was checking out this site Welcome to the Frontpage - k5ehx.net They have a great interactive map for repeaters and you can open them with a multitude of programs to include Google Earth. Using that I could create a line from my typical camping locations to repeaters. The ones listed...
So the closest repeaters on 2m are about 6-8 miles away through mountains and coniferous forest. The locations I camp are typically Colville National Forest in WA and Northern Priest Lake area in Idaho. You think a hand held will hit them????
