Coax is an impedance transformer only the antenna is NOT (about) 50 ohms. If your SWR changes drastically when you add coax then you have other problems.

have you tried changing the location where the coax center conductor attaches to the ring? using the radials, you should get a usable (1.2 - 1.3 swr) on that pole. Also, I think the recommended overall length is 239 inches, many people shorten it to about 229. YMMV

one auto mode will retune EVERY time it is keyed. The other auto mode will retune every time the preset VSWR is exceeded. Its in the manual, but most people miss it at first.
