Monte, a nice car! I had a 1984... lasted until 1994 and then sold it to a friend who drove it another 4 years.
I managed to "mount" my DX959 vertically, up against the console, just in front of the drivers seat. I will take a pic and post it in a day or two (don't have the radio in the car...
That's a good job, Mongoose. You didn't say what kind of car it is but looks typical of just about anything us "normal" middle class can afford (I guess a Lincoln or Caddy has a bigger interior...??)
My little Malibu can barely shoehorn in a Galaxy DX959. I had my Cobra 200GTL-DX mounted...
Yeah, I had one too, what a great little antenna. I'm pretty sure I came across some plans to make one, somewhere on the net. It ain't all that easy, from what I recall, but it can be done.

Hey, I had one too! We can almost start a "past owners of the Midland 79-290" club.
I recall mine was noisy too. Only ran it mobile and only kept it for a few months. Just too noisy, since most of my ragchewin' was fairly distant ground wave SSB bases (friends of mine) who tended...
For what you described, your best bet upon getting your ticket is a 2 meter handie. These should be reasonably priced and you can even snag some used handies on ebay very inexpensively.
When you're dirt biking, simplex will work great. You'll also want to find out the local repeaters and...
