When the contest's are running I just find something else to do. I enjoy rag chew and PSK. When it is contest weekend I spend time on the computer to see what else I can learn about HAM radio.

You can have the best radio made but with poor antenna system you WILL NOT be a happy radio man. Put the bulk of your funds into a good antenna system!

My IC-2720 will receive it and auto selects AM, no transmit but does receive.

If you want to really find out how much it helps forget the repeaters and use simplex. Then you and your contact will just be using your signals and not that of the repeater.

Yaesu FT 60R will cross band receive and transmit but not as a repeater.

If so that would be something to check out before laying out the green stuff.

I have an Icom IC-2720 around $250 when you can find them, one thought when you transmit on one side the other side mutes so if you want to listen as you are transmiting you would probably need two radios.

I would think long and hard about the Battery Saver/Protector. It would shut down the radio when the voltage got low but would you still have enough to start the truck. Some of the newer ones don't like to start with a low battery. Just food for thought.
