I got my magnum 257hp brand new direct from the distributor. The power is nice and wide frequency selection was nice. Built in power mic was nice. Didn't like the feel of the cheap controls. Didn't like having to adjust the variable power every time I went from AM to SSB. I think for the price...

I don't disagree that they suck, but you should still be able to get SWR down. I just ended up going with a 4' firestik for the particular application. The tunable tip made SWR real easy.

Are francis really dependent on coax to make the 50 ohm match? I tried one of their 3' antennas and didn't have much luck.

The one I had put out a lot of power right out of the box. I think the problem comes when people try to get that extra 20 watts out of them and burn the thing up. 20 watts that will never get noticed on the other end. Overall it was a good radio for what it was, but I wanted something different.

Let me know what you find. If 201 is the resistor very near the final, I lifted mine and did not get any increase in modulation either. Audio output remained exactly where it had been before but I might just have bad luck.

I think they both have very sensitive recieve so you will have some noise mobile. The HP and regular 257 are so close in price, it makes sense to get the HP. Overall I think it is a very good radio for the price, but it just wasn't the right radio for me.

Got a 520 this week. Out of the box was around 2.5dk swing to around 5. Can turn up the pot to 5dk swinging to 9. Can't figure out which one is the mod limiter. Lifted the leg on d204 and had no output at all. That diode is listed a d204 on one side of the board an the other side says d203. Not...
