    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

My 2m reference antenna is a dipole using a panel mount BNC connector, similar to how you've illustrated, but I soldered the two 12 ga. house wire elements perpendicular to the center pin. Because the center pin can rotate in its dielectric, I can "fold" mine up and stick it in my back pocket. I...

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

We used a real antenna analyzer and hooked up the coax with the antenna sitting on the bench, and it came in nice around 160 MHz. We walked around to various metal things and stuck the bracket against it while measuring. A couple of first class dorks! I felt like a boob fiddling around with tin...

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

The antenna is bolted to a steel frame shelving, so there are lots of "radials". Well, at least three, but of course the cross members are just set in slotted holes. I brought the thing in to work today to use the expensive equipment. We just need to find something to bolt it to for a ground...

Right to carry past till now?

I am expecting a far more oppressive government than one that just takes away our arms. It's going to be a very ugly place, but still the best place in the world :D

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

I tried a few ground wires, but measured continuity to the engine, so grounding should be OK. I kept trimming and watched the two nulls, one around 100 MHz and another around 250 MHz. The nulls moved only a couple MHz if at all, but the SWR started to rise on both nulls as I trimmed. The whip...

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

Now, I'd be ecstatic if it was just a grounding issue, and I could see it being the problem. Actually, the back of the sissy bar has 3 flanges that bolt the cushion, and I'm using the one on the center top to hold my aluminum bracket, and flanges are chrome plated and a bit slippery. I'll hang a...

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

It's an average sissy bar, comes up to about the shoulder blades (perhaps 20 inches tall). The sissy bar ends bolt to the rear fender. Looks like this.

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

I would have hooked it up and rode it in, but the SWR was still around 9 and I did not want to blow out the PA on my little APRS xceiver... Oh, and I have about a 1 foot jumper with a fresh BNC that I just put on, mini 8X cable soldered to a couple lugs at the antenna side.

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

That's right. The stock antenna was 31" and I cut off about 10" trying to be a little conservative (~20"). So, with a 31" stinger, my SWR comes in at ~ 105 MHz. with a 19" stinger, my SWR comes in at ~108 MHz. WTF is that about? Looks like I need to cut off about 20 more inches, eh?

    Tuning 1/4 wave on Bike

I've had this SS stinger for the broadcast band laying around with plans to cut it for 2m. My bike has a sissy bar, a passenger seat back, so picture an upside down U bolted just behind the seat. The top of that is where I bolted an angle bracket for the stinger. My first measurement is taken...

Why would you ever possibly need these connector "adapters".

We use these kinds of adapters to protect our precision connectors from excessive wear and damage in high use/aggressive environments. This UHF connector, probably just as has been illustrated already...

    148 GTL.. Price?

That's a good warning. When I went to buy some machines, the seller and his helper wanted to drive out to their storage and show me all the tooling they had for sale, which I was also interested in. I braved the alley to the storage shed, but was worried I was gonna die. I scored big on that...

How to animate a .gif as your Avatar????

it's funky. the image url is showing a jpg image, but that file type does not support animation, but I can load the image url in a browser and it animates... The point there is, you cannot save the file locally as an animated file type.

    TRC-448 Flea Market Find

I missed them all so far this year. I did go to the regular one a couple times. I bought one of those manual egg beater kinds of drills, on advice from Tom Lipton.

    Amazing and cheap SDR receiver.

I found another setting in SDR# that lets you select the sampling of quadrature sampling, direct I, or direct Q inputs. I selected direct Q and the HF band came alive! As I was expecting, I get a handful of AM broadcast without an antenna. I could not find a similar setting in SDR Console V2...

OK, maybe there is paperwork that could make it. I think the 15 round mag is the only issue. They probably have a CA model though...

    Amazing and cheap SDR receiver.

That looks good on the tablet. I figured out the HF signals must be birdies. There is no change to RF levels when disconnecting a piece of wire. I'm sure I should be able to pick up some AM broadcast stations. I can do that just by holding a diode and crystal earpiece with my hands. I opened...

    Amazing and cheap SDR receiver.

OK, I mucked around with it a bit more and tried SDR Console V2. I kind of like the SDR# interface a little better, but at least SDR Console V2 turns on the HF band. Not much better, but I can actually see all WWV signals (2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz) hovering down there -120 dBm. Still no...
