Yes my Apple mini has a Firewire 800 port. I picked up a FW cable at Microcenter to connect my Flex 5000.
Regarding the adapter you linked to. It says "connects to the Thunderbolt port on your Mac computer, giving you a FireWire 800 port"
My read of that is if you have a Thunderbolt port on...
I run an i7 Apple Mini that boots into Windows 10. I used a standard Firewire 800 cable with no issues controlling a Flex 5000.
I would be interested the adapter you linked to. The way it reads is that it would allow connection of a Firewire device. So that sounds like it would work.
I ran an 756 pro 2 for a couple of years and really liked it. I liked the performance, ergonomics, size and layout.
After I got a Flex I let the pro 2 go. Anyhow I've been wanting a smaller size HF rig as a backup that didn't require AC and also for trips. I picked up a 7300 a few weeks back...
The Royce is a very nice looking radio. But wow the price!!
You could get a brand new shipped Icom IC7300 for $999 after rebate a week ago.
I guess before I would spend $750 plus shipping I would get the Icom.
That is a nice looking radio. For a quick short term antenna you can use a piece of speaker wire or any other wire and run it around the edge of the ceiling, A couple of thumb tacks will hold it up. That should let you start to receive some stations.
A quick receive check would be WWV...
I enjoyed the 2017 Hamvention. The motel I stay at is south of Dayton and the drive in to Xenia (back way) was a lot faster then the drive up to Hara. Convenient/free parking at a satellite parking spot. Rode a free bus into the fairgrounds and caught a golf cart ride up to the front gate...

Wow I have an original Grant (non DX) sitting on the shelf that i haven't powered up in a few years. It's interesting to see what people are willing to bid for the old radios.
I agree that the Icom 7300 would be a very nice HF rig.
If it was me and the 7300 was to many dollars I would shop around for a used Kenwood TS590SG. I've seen them listed fairly often for under a $1000.
Then next down from there I would go with fourstringburn's suggestion of a FT450D.
That tower represents a lot of your hard work and I hope brings you a ton of good DX. :)
Also just to be clear not trying to be snarky about your project..
Just looking at the wind load of the antenna plus including the wind load and weight of the mast and coax. Also thinking about two...
Wow - very nice - that should work great.
So many of us have severe antenna compromises that it's not easy to improve over a basic ground mounted vertical or a dipole at a modest height.
I would anticipate that the 7610 will be enough of a performance and feature jump that it would be worth...
Unless your Pro III is giving you problems I would hold tight for another year to see what new options there might be.
The 7610 will likely be a substantial improvement over the 7600. Also another year might see other options from the Big 3.
Several guys I know have the Yaesu 5000 and love...
2 meter SSB / CW can be fun if there is activity in your area. Unless you are near a metro you may not find a lot of activity unless as w9cll mentions there is a contest. To really give 2m SSB a try you will want a yagi like a Cushcraft 13b2 or an M2 2m12 up at a decent height with a rotor...
Brett I think we are in agreement on most of the points. I 100% agree that radios in this price point should now include a RX and IF out as well as good transverter interface. I believe they are a fairly low cost thing for the manufacture to include.
An external touch screen to me would be...
I agree with 222DBFL that I'm not concerned with a touch screen. The Android and iPhones and iPads have demonstrated that touch screens are a mature technology.
However for a radio on the desk at home I'm not as interested interacting with the radio by touch screen. I prefer a larger front...
It's very cool to see that Icom is moving quickly to bring out a big brother to the IC7300. With the IC-7600 having a street price around $3000 I wouldn't expect the new whiz bang 7610 to debut at a lower price. What will be interesting is when IC7300 sales slow down to see if Icom will start...
Wow that is so much more variety then what I've been seeing. One recent local hamfest had one TS-530. The only related accessory was another guy with MC-50 that had been wired for something else.
The Hara arena was in rough shape but I've enjoyed attending 6 or 7 hamventions.
To me it was worth the drive to look at the new gear inside and spend a couple of days poking around the flea market area.
Good-Bye to Hara Arena — Hamvention to Relocate in 2017...
