What kind of antenna is it? For example is it a Mag mount? Trunk lid mount? Mirror mount?
What band or frequency range are you interested in?
For example is it a CB antenna that you want for use on 10 or 11 meters?
6 Meters can be a lot of fun during the season. Starting in May I listen more on 6. Generally for a few months there is a lot of activity.
Most newer HF radios include 6 meter coverage and it doesn't take much effort or cost to put up a 3 element yagi with a TV rotor.
For me winter...
I was inactive for a number of years and then about 4 years ago jumped back into 'playing' radio.
I only started using LOTW about 2 years ago. So I went back and uploaded the logs from the previous 2 years and had a number of those contacts confirmed.
Some people struggle with the initial...
The bands were crowded with a lot of signals. I only had time to get on during the day on Saturday and Sunday. Stuck to 10, 15 and 20 and made a little over 300 QSO's with about half on 10.
Kind of figured that it was worth focusing on 10 and 15 since we are on the down hill side of the...
Welcome to the hobby!
If you are interested in talking beyond your local area then HF is really the direction you want to look at.
I've helped a couple of local young hams find their first HF rigs (used gear) at hamfests. The first got a very nice condition FT-450AT for $525 about 2 years...
It really in part depends on what you want the log to be used for.
If you are interested in awards like DXCC or WAS you will want to use LOTW.
Logs like QRZ seem pointless and I have read numerous online mentions from e-qsl users about fake QSO's being input by other users.
I didn't see...
The G5RV will work best when the ladder line is fully extended at a 90 degree angle from the antenna. Definitely avoid having the ladder line coiled up.
SWR is not the only criteria for an antenna, but do you have an external tuner to help out? The G5RV (102 ft version) tunes best on 20...
My call from about 1977/78 started with KBIH. The license application came in the box with a 5 watt 6 channel walkie talkie.
Grogan - a Uniden Washington and PDL2 was a nice setup.
By 80 I had a Madison with an Expander 500 mike. But for an antenna had an AstroPlane. Never got a beam in...
Nice old thread.
When I was looking at ground mounted verticals my wife thought most of them looked "ugly" with the various pieces and parts. She really hated the Butternut vertical picture. :)

I was a subscriber at one point and always enjoyed MT. A good publication to go along with the radio hobby.

I agree the FT-950 is a great radio for the price.
When I got mine I had compared the 950 along with the Icom 746pro and the Kenwood 2000.
The Kenwood had such funky styling and tiny little buttons that I didn't care for it. Then the Icoms seemed to have a fairly well known issue with the...
A dipole for weak signal work on 2m or 432 will be a rough way to go.
Antenna height, low loss coax and antenna gain are very important.
Look at something like the quagi
The Quagi antenna
IK1HGE 432MHz 8el. Quagi Antenna
They are fairly easy to build. For fun I built a quagi for 222.
I can offer some comparison.
I have an 260 foot horizontal loop that is 20 to 30 foot high. Also I have a 75 meter inverted L.
The L has about 35 feet vertical and the horizontal section goes from 35 feet to about 40 feet above ground at the end. The inverted L has about 30 radials at the...
If you are wanting to have a Panadapter on the FT-950 you will need to get the interface board and install internally.
RFSPACE IF-2000
Then you can connect something like an LP-Pan or SDR-IQ to complete.
