If I google 5/8 ground plane pictures almost all of them have horizontal radials. I'm kind of making it like these:

I am attempting to make a wire 5/8 gp but my swr is a little high. ! was calculating for 146 mhz. I cut my copper wire longer and made 10 turns around a pencil about 6" long. At 146 my SWR is 2.3 but at 158 mhz it is 1.1 indicating it is too short. If I know I am 12 mhz off is there a...
Great thread! I just got my license and a rig but I don't know if it's working. I hear other bands but never heard anything on 10 meters. (I did hear somebody once that I think was in Europe). Is there anything I can hear in central Michigan? I am wondering how 10 meters compares to 2...
If you are trying to use your 3/8 mount you may be out of luck. There are adapters to go from 3/8 to NMO but none that I know of from NMO to 3/8. Sorry, but I couldn't find any either. You are probably better off getting a new mount and buy any antenna you want instead of restricting your...
I bought two Yaesu FT-1802 rigs at a hamfest and both have the same problem. Both receivers are no where as good as my scanner. I can pick up 5 weather stations with my scanner and these units can barely pick up 1. Same antenna. All repeaters are very weak. It seems like there's some kind of...
Thanks Capt. Do you have any idea how much better? Have you compared both side by side? There aren't many repeaters here and I want to talk home when the spaghetti hits the fan. That would entail me buying two SSB units without ever trying it.
Acknowledgement of the genius of the people who invent this stuff! These different forms have evolved over history. The key to communication is encode something and then decode it. Man discovered radio because AM happens in nature. When lightning strikes it generates random electromagnetic...
I already have LMR400 for VHF. I am adding HF up to 10 Meters. So there is no difference between stranded and solid? Is it harder to solder? 213 & 9913 are identical?
I am trying to understand the difference in the RG8 (suffix) coaxes. How does solid vs stranded compare? What about foam? What about 213 & 214 & 9913? Is RG-8X not as good? Is 8U better? I ran across this:
"RG8u Coax Cable with a much lower loss than RG58"
I had go with the CA-2x4SR because of my full size work van height. I would have loved to get the CSB-790A which actually has a higher gain but is 62" tall! Give us a review later.
The receive has two issues. The sensitivity is almost non-existent although I can kind of pick up a little. Every .025 MHZ there is some kind of internal (am?) carrier. As I tune it gets stronger as I approach .x22 .x23 .x24 and it peaks at .x25 then goes down at .x26 .x28 .x28 then normal...
Comet
The gain is proportional to the length. The highest gain is the comet SBB-7. I have a van so I had to go with the CA-2x4SR.

Yea, I am beginning to think those numbers are BS. My scanner can pick up many weather stations and repeaters the Yaesu can't even detect. The ones it can pick up that are scratchy are clear on the scanner. It has nothing to do with selectivity.
I recent spoke with an Icom dealer who said Yaesus are being made in China and the poorer quality is showing. Are they, or is this true or sour grapes? He had lunch with one of the founders of Icom. They spoke though an interpreter but when the word China came up he tensed up and growled...
I too have a question. How can my Radio Shack 2067 with a sensitivity of .5 uv sound WAY better than my Yaesu FT-1802 with a sensitivity of "better than .2 uv" off the same antenna? Do I have this backwards? Shouldn't the Yaesu work better?
Well I will address this here since this site has such a crummy search feature. I found this thread through Google. Not even the search here will return Yaesu 1802!!!! I just got a FT-1802M and I am majorly disappointed that my Radio Shack 2670 scanner puts this thing to shame. I may try...
