I suspect a bad electrolytic capacitor in the audio amp is the culprit. They have a tendency to short out if allowed to sit for a time. If I where you I repalce every one in the radio before you go any farther. You have needle movement but most likely it is a dead carrier with no audio.

The Swing in a radio depending on how the Mod was preformed could be causing a Harmonic that is throwing off the SWR. If the harmonic is affecting the SWR you can bet that the radio won't sound good and is splattering as well.

Good entry level radio to get your feet wet get the programming cable with it for 6 bucks and download Chirp to program it with. If you cen fit it into the budget a good after market antenna will make it a new radio, hte stock antenna leaves a lot to be desired in the performance dept.

NO!just because it is a 4 pin it is no guarantee and you can actually do damage to the radio in some instances if it is wrong. However in this case your fine.

It cold be that the mic is pinned differently from 1 radio to the other. I would start there. Some radios depending on the circuitry require the mic to complete the audio circuit some don't.

I had a simalar issue when I had my 06 T 2000. I ended up mounting the Predator on a 4' mast that I clamped to the back my headache rack. Worked good enough to work Birminghan UK from Pheonix AZ on LSB and 100 watts you can do the same thing off the grab bars on the catwalk.
