"The same is true for the push button controls".
Amen to that!! And while we're at it, how about those short shaft front controls? If you have to replace one (or more) you begin to wonder if any thread makes it out on the side of the panel to get a nut on...
I didn't like the Cobra when I tested one. Why not take the plunge and buy a used Uniden PC-122 am/ssb mobile? It's smaller than the 538 and works like a champ.
I'd pass on anything manufactured in the last 20years or so and pick an older model to use off ebay. It'll be like holding a metal brick in your hand, but you'll have an antenna that will be in the 3-4 foot length (much better for getting out). All of these are AM and you be able to pick one up...
The FT-100D is a nice rig, but does have issues with feedback and swr warnings. It's not necessarily all the rigs fault, you have to look at the whole environment. I ran a 100D in one vehicle without a hitch, bought a new car and had problems out the SO239... I ran into others who had similar...
It's an easy mod to do. You can do a search on Google or do a search for mods dk with google. One thing I'll point out to you is that everything on radio works great except the Noise Blanker. I've owned 3 of DX70's thinking that it was such a great rig that I could live with the crappy Noise...
GRANT XL
The Grant XL all the way back to the President Grant were great radios. Personally, I liked the appearance of the Uniden Grant vs. the XL, but that's just a cosmetic thing...

Microphones vary in quality for a variety of reasons: The rig, the mike, and persons voice. If you want a "Crisp" sound, the D104M6 will do the job, but if your voice is already "Crisp", then something like a Turner Plus 3 would be the trick and add some bass. And then sometimes the stock...
Looking for some help - I have to come up with some $$$ and I have the choice of selling either my 703 (HF) or the 817ND. The 703 is used, has the Icom carrying pack, Gel Cell battery, while the 817ND is still NIB (Haven't had the time to use it, so I figured someon here owns one).
Having...
Nice shack/photos! what do you have under the microphone sock, reg. 104 or a custom job?
