Man, I would be spoiled if I had a set-up like that! You've really got it going on.
I'll have to do some checking on that Icom. Not much by way of used rigs in the newspaper in my neck of the woods (Des Moines, IA) so, I'm learning what I can before I go the the next ham swap meet.
Thanks...
Does anybody talk 6 meter? I was thinks about trying it while the FCC decide weather or not to drop the CW requirement for HF rights like the ITU suggests.
Any cheap used 6 meter rigs I should look for?

Any ideas where I could find a copy of a users manual for a NC-173 receiver. It was built between the late 40's and early 50's. This thing covers broadcast-6 meter am and cw.
Thanks for any help.

The manual states that a stock radio on SSB will need 5 amps (at 25 watts) or 3 amps (at 10 watts) for AM.
I would double that and use a 10 amp power supply. That way you have a good cushion and won't be over-taxing your power supply.
I like the Turner +3B microphone for this radio.

As the the others have said this should be for fun. There are too many people that take it to the extremes. Remeber, it is just a hobby. If you get some butt-head being a jerk to you, just ignore him/her. Some people get their kicks out of being a pain in the butt!
Just remember, that radio...
That's right! One bite at a time. I would advise getting your tech ticket and maybe your CW test done first. Then, take a few weeks to study up for the general test. That will give you time to actually absorb and internalize what you learned.
Have some fun before you try for the Extra ticket...
That yaseu is one sweet looking unit! I'll have to check around and see if I can find one used around here. I missed a Kenwood 840 for $250.00 last weekend. Oh well, something will pop up.
Thanks for the input.

The license it self is free, but, you have to pay to take the test. This is usually $7.00 - $10.00 . The CW rate is only 5 word per minute and all you have to do is write it down and answer a few questions about what was sent.

I just passed my tech test and I'm going to take my general and CW test in the middle of March. I thought I'd start scouting out a HF rig to use as a base. Can anyone tell me what to look for in the $300.00 - $500.00 range? Also, who makes a good antenna tuner? I'm stuck running my A99 antenna...
Well I wired it up and I've been told the Turner sounds quite a bit better. I really like the fact that it has the knob on top and a lock down lever. I think I'll just keep the lollipop for a spare. Now if I could just get more modulation out of that little radio I'd be happy!
