Help a newb build a Yagi

I get all my aluminum tubing for antenna elements from DX Engineering. They have all kinds of stuff for constructing antennas. Prices and shipping are very reasonable.

    Question methods of lowering SWR

One thing I did not see in any of the above posts, and I just breezed through them rather quickly: Beating your brains out to get an antenna's swr from 1.5 to 1 down to 1.1 to 1 is pretty much a waste of time. The person on the other end is NOT going to notice a difference.:bdh: If it's...

    New Anytone AT-588UV VHF/UHF Mobile

Motorola Astro radios use C4FM in the non simulcast mode for digital voice modulation. I have heard some hams call this P-25, but it is not. Our P-25 radios use CPQSK modulation, which is kind of a mix of FM and AM. Looks really weird on the modulation scope.

    Items on Fleabay

I think I am going to convert it to 6 meters, and just buy something else for the low bands. It does work good on 15 and 20 meters, but 40 and 80 don't tune right. According to my grid dip meter, the tank circuit is resonant around 8.3 Mhz and on 80, 4.8 Mhz. It's like it needs another turn...

    Items on Fleabay

Did you ever notice how a good deal of ham radio items are labeled as "vintage"? Is that so we will think, "Wow! what a cool find, I'd pay a buzzilion dollars for that rare piece of equipment!!!" Or how about the, "I got this from the estate of my friend's, cousin's, grandfather's estate, so...

    6m Larcan Conversion

It looks as though it would be shielded after it is slid into the drawer. But, if it is left out in the open, I fear there would be RF floating all over the shack.

    6m Larcan Conversion

Wow! Nice! That would make a nice 2 meter KW amp! Our local university TV station has one of those running only 175 watts on Ch5 digital, (10-1) for weather and radar. Still collecting parts for mine. Anyone got any photos of metal work to shield the circuit board?

APRS Aliases & Call Sign Impersonation

Most hams including myself, when at home station, have QRZ.com webpage up. I always look up the other station I am in QSO with. Mostly to get a good beam heading on them.

    Radio Etiquette for a city

Push button, then talk. NOT start talking, then push button. Also, turn up volume on radio, so you can hear the other persons transmission. And last but not least, turn the radio ON. People used to full duplex cell phones often forget this basic rule.

    VHF/UHF Activity Complaints

I don't want to sound condescending here, please don't take it that way. I think the reason most folks have poor results on these bands is due to poor antenna systems. So, I will give some advice in that regard. Back when I first got on 6 meters, up in Ohio, I was in high school. I had an...

    Kenwood TS-990S

Cool rig, I want one! Hmm, maybe if I sell my little boat......... Has 590 RX for secondary rx? Neat! The 590 Rx is supposed to rival the K3's RX. I would like to try a 590 up against the 480's Rx on 6 meters, which is nothing to sneeze at.

    Upgrade question

I think you can keep your old call sign, no matter what. I've had this one for 45 years! Used to be if you had a 1X3 or smaller, you were an experienced ham, from the 1960's and earlier. Seems funny to see folks with 1X3 call signs that can't figure out how to put up a dipole and cut it to...

    VHF PROPAGATION

Wow! Had one of those over the Gulf coast a few months ago. 2 meters went crazy, I got quite a few 1000 mile plus contacts out of that one! So far 36 new grid squares on 2 meters this summer, so far.

    Co-phase amplifiers?

When cutting coax lines for phasing purposes, don't forget take into consideration the velocity factor of the coax.
