There are a lot fewer stations now... and propagation really stinks lately. Check out the 43m band for pirate radio stations weekend nights. 6925 thru 6955 USB is a good place to start.
Also good experience with The Wireman... have used others as well with success but I like helping out the small business owner whenever possible.

Normally it isn't a good idea to run excessive power on low power frequencies. There are a lot of adjacent frequencies to MURS that might object to interference.
I've found that most people assume they can just buy a radio and antenna and start using it without regard to the frequency it is...
Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I've assisted in numerous radio licensing and equipment acquisition projects for various groups.
Some 4x4 organizations have commercial business licenses and by being a member you are authorized to use those frequencies. A lot of hunting clubs and even prepper groups do this as well... pretty common practice especially with itinerant freqs (commonly called dot frequencies)...
I run an off fed center multiband dipole at about 65 ft high which I really like. No tuner needed for the ham bands:

Yes, they both did. One had a corroded battery so I replaced the 9v battery snap but that was it. Other than some paint scratching on the bases the chrome was in nice shape, too. Been in radio for over 40 years and these are my first D104s..
Just purchased two amplified D104s off ebay for about $50 total from different sellers. You've got to be patient to get a good deal but these were in nice shape and worth it.
There are also some grandfathered commercial radios like the Kenwood TK-2100 that are available very inexpensively now. They have two channels but you can store eight memory locations in them and move them to the A/B channel switch with a couple button presses.
The Baofeng radios aren't bad for...
My take is equipment you use more often should be closer to you. Equipment that has long leads that doesn't need constant adjustments on a shelf above the bench. Power supplies should have most/all the connectors needed on long enough cables so you can power something up quickly without...
I've seen them for 25 MHz... rare but they were once commercially available. You can make an HF version as well with either elevated or ground level radials. There are quite a few variations that can be found online.
Also common on UHF. Here is a home brew one for the 440 MHz ham band...
9' radiating element had a parallel element running down the side of it, spaced a couple of inches apart, and went all the way down to about 3" above the ground plane radials
That's a folded monopole ground plane. Used a lot for low band commercial base stations (30-50 MHz) and has a little...
I am elmering a local ham who had the same nightmarish experience you had. It is unfortunately way too common. Feel free to PM me if you need some help or direction.
