it seems that there is a contest of some kind almost every weekend and definitely on 3 day weekends, during contests it is hard to find a rag chew and if you do, some clown will set up right next to your frequency and turn up his amp with his "CQ Contest"....on those weekends 17 is your best bet...

wire antennas are fun to build and experiment with...

and they operate a repeater that is node connected on 147.150 with a positive offset and a tone of 123.
it is hard to figure a place that did not have folks to test somewhere around... where/what town do you live in?
It is likely that folks can be found to help you out with the testing.
I was not sold on it when I first heard of it, but was sold on it when I entered the shack and saw what amateur radio made available.
That is why I often pass folks on to others once I have determined what their interests might be. Kids today who are into computer use almost before they can talk...

to sell amateur radio effectively, you need to sell yourself a bit...you can't just tell folks how great you think it is and drag them to a test session and tell them to have fun...
if you are not willing and don't have the time to elmer... just keep your hobby to yourself...

agreed...every mobile antenna i have ever installed, i either made a choke balun or installed cores on the line...I have used 4 different brands of screwdrivers over the years and made one of my own...if you do not use the core (or some kind of core) on the drive line, as was stated it will act...
I have the dual band model (not the 4 band model) and I find that the crossband feature works well.... to a point...if you are just using it for local stuff...say hiking and using it with an HT for a local repeater it does fine...
but if you plan on using it for a linked repeater with a net...
