2995 is a nice radio. Bell's CB did one for me - gets great reports.
If the goal is to sound great on AM hard to beat the 2995.
That said it is expensive. Although I'd be leary about buying used ham gear, you are getting close to buying a decent new rig that can be modified to do CB.
Neither...
Where is the antenna in relation to panels? Mounted on roof above panels?
Question is, what materials are used in the panel.
Cells are silicon, covers are probably polycarb with aluminum frames?
If so might look a lot like a roof shingle to Rf.

Seems like the thread drifted a bit, but for posterity's sake, I did the watt meter evaluation recently and went with:
lp100
When the meter on my MFJ 989D reads 1.0 - the LP-100A is still showing 1.2, and with the LP100A I can dial it right in with confidence that I am seeing a good reading.
Reply from Ameritron:

Lamps on the QSK board appear to be blown and is mostly caused by SWR spikes back from the attenna. They generally act similiar to fuse in this application. If you ohm them out, they are probably open. Part...
Thanks for all the replies.
Still waiting to hear back from Ameritron. Their tech support line comes back as "this is a non-working number" so I have a ticket open thru the web site.
When I flip the switch from STBY to OPR, the XMT light lights up and I hear a relay clack inside.
When I key...
Hmmmm - I thought it had no relays - using that board that does the electronic switching but I heard something clacking in there so must use a relay for this circuit.
Coax is all tight - transmitter to amp, to LP100a watt meter, to tuner to low pass filter and out to antenna. SWR is good...
New amp, ameritron AL-80B.
When switching from STBY (standby) to XMT (operate) the amp has the effect of reducing the receive gain.
Does not happen when the amp is off - only when energized.
Is this normal?
(AMp has the grid current protection and QSK board in it)
Interesting thread. Any conclusions? Can we summarize?
-> CMC, causes a feedline to radiate like an antenna and is a cause of RFI.
-> Monopole antennas like the IMAX 2000, feed length, grounding and height off the ground impact CMC. But no definitive answer as to how to reduce CMC.
->...
Thanks again everyone.
I think I am convinced to pass on ebay.
The more I think of it the more I like the idea of having something that is easily modded so that it can double as an emergency radio.
Based on that I guess Ten Tec and Elecraft are out (they seem to be a bit over-zealous with...
Looking at the ICOM 7000. With the mars and tvro mod could also double as a great emergency radio as it covers gmrs/FRS, marine vhf freqs and even ems bands.
Is there a base version of this radio available?
Is there any other radio made with this kind of coverage?

Thanks again guys - re DMU - yes, spent some time looking at the manual, I don't see $1000 worth of value there.
RE Flex - didn't even think of that, interesting.
Ahhhhh - choices choices
Thanks for the replies. Hmm at the 718's price point TS440 doesn't look so good.
M42 - why do you say to run away - experienced quality issues?
Yaesu 950 - - - One of the eHam reviews mentioned that the 950 should not be purchased without the DMU which is a significant adder like $1000 -...
Another thought as I am leaning toward the 440 because of cost - I think these radios were built in the 80s . . . . . any particular issues with them as they age?
I know that depending on type caps can go bad etc. but with regard to this specific radio - how has it aged?
I am looking to purchase my first HF rig.
Options I am kicking around:
1. Buy a used radio like a Kenwood TS440 - looks like for between $400 and $700 I can get a working specimen of decent condition.
2. Buy a new moderately priced rig like:
- Kenwood TS 2000 ($1500)
- Yaesu FTDX3000...
On the 959 there is a volume control - if u push in the knob turns talk back off. Not sure if the 44v works the same way.
