    New antenna from Sirio Gain-Master

Me likey! That antenna is just plain SEXY! The Italians do EVERYTHING sexy, shoes, women, Ferraris, Lamborghini's, and now Antennas! If LOOKS alone give antennas any appreciable amount of PERFORMANCE, then this should be the WORLD'S BEST PERFORMING BASE ANTENNA. However, an antenna's...

    all around radio

Something relatively small, an Icom IC-706MKIIG or IC-7000; something large, (sacrificing 440 MHz), then an IC-746Pro (as far as Icoms go.) You can get halfway decent audio out of an IC-718 or 706MKIIG is you hook a D104 to the BACK (13 pin din) jack of the radio, and run no more than 10W...

Do you like "Modern" Radio's or...

For SERIOUS SWL, I prefer anything that glows in the dark with a pair of 'comfortable' High-Z headphones. I turn DOWN the RF Gain and turn up the AF (audio) gain. There's just something so warm, nostalgic, superior to the audio quality of a tube receiver. Heck, just look at the Sherwood specs...

    KL200P SSB Relay Clicking

Actually on the 979 turn UP the mic gain and see if that still does it. Yes, you could try an SWR meter between the two, but it really will only indicate accurately on AM. Also, try changing the length of the coax jumper between the 979 and the amp, or ferrite beads (common mode chokes) over...

    KL200P SSB Relay Clicking

Yup, or (possibly?) a bad delay capacitor in the amp, although you indicate that your other SSB rigs work fine. Maybe the carrier null adjustment in the other rigs is NOT adjusted properly and is maintaining the relay in the energized position, but the 979 may be properly nulled. Why the SWR...

    Sounds like a Galaxy

Again, +1.... and, the new Magnums already have the Top Gun Modulator and/or Top Gun Processor features (switchable too I believe) already installed. Also, it seems that the NEWER the Magnum, the LOUDER it is on AM (they've ALWAYS been sweet on SSB, just the older ones on AM weren't the...

    Sounds like a Galaxy

+1; That's a great idea, cuz all you'd EVER have to do, regardless of which radio you ever purchased, is (possibly) just change the mic plug to match the radio of choice. Also, if you get a 4 pin Cobra/Galaxy echo mic, there are adapters for just about ANY rig; so..... 1 mic, multiple rigs!

    Sounds like a Galaxy

If you want AM only, which is what a Cobra 29 offers, then go with either a Connex or a General Lee / General Washington. No need for the RFX75 add on because you'll be running an external amp. Also, many Connex rigs already come with the legendary Connex echo board already installed. I...

    Tech Help President Jackson

I think THIS may be the problem, as I 'think' the VCO is looking to see approximately 6-8 volts, (changes as you change bands / channels), but I'm only seeing about 5 with NO change when I change bands. Will a 2SA1012 replace a 2SA473? (cuz all I have in stock are 1012's) From what I...

    choices

Hmmmmm.... sounds like someone's considering either the Kenwood TS480SAT or the TS480HX. I'd say go for the 200W rig because if you run mobile u will need all the help u can get because mobile antennas aren't all that efficient to begin with. Having said that, for portable operations, the...

    Tech Help President Jackson

Yes sir, sure did. In fact, the PA function works fine as well on all mics tested.

no tx on cobra 29 ltd

No TX AND no PA, could be either microphone, mic jack, CB/PA switch or wiring, wiring from mic jack, and/or audio IC chip. I'd check those FIRST, and then move on from there. Once I got the PA function working, then I'd move on to the RF portion. Keep us posted. Good luck!

    Tech Help President Jackson

Folks, A friend of mine gave me his President Jackson to look at because of no RX or TX. The Jackson is a 5 band AM/FM/SSB transceiver. This radio has special meaning to him, as was his late Father's. Anyway, radio lights up and works good on PA mode, but no TX or RX. Last time the...

    Texas Ranger 696 Freedom One

18W AM and 22 SSB on a single final'ed MOSFET is pretty respectable, considering it was set up from the factory with NPN bipolars. The new Galaxy's, which come from the factory with a MOSFET already installed, have had circuit redesigns to accomodate the MOSFET; circuit changes which help to...

    Texas Ranger 696 Freedom One

On the Freedom One there is NO variable RF power output, so there is no need for a VR18, which would be AM LOW POWER OUT setting. In the TR696 there is merely an AM HIGH POWER OUT setting: VR14. So, no need to change that fixed resistor for a variable, as it won't do anything. If you want...

    Texas Ranger 696 Freedom One

As far as I know, most 696's I've seen have a 2SC2166 driving a single 2SC1969. I've never done a MOSFET mod on a Galaxy Chassis, just the Cobra 25/29 (and Uniden equivalents), although I've seen the newer Galaxy's with the MOSFETS already in them. I'd say "follow the instructions". If...

    Texas Ranger 696 Freedom One

Cables & Connectors, Inc is where I go whenever I'm coming home from Hartford, CT. They carry the complete line of NTE, and they do quite a bit of internet business. Now that I'm traveling to NYC I rarely get up there anymore, as I am in Southern CT. Hope that helps. You could always do...
