RF PARTS has both of them in stock.
I've also had success with eBay, but you'll need to wait for them to come from places like Hong Kong, Thailand, Macau, etc..... and BEWARE of counterfeits.
For the 2SA1012, NTE makes an acceptable equivalent: NTE153, but I haven't found an acceptable...
Wow, nice clean install!
This is the way it's supposed to be done. I'd be too embarrassed to show my inverted vee's with baluns being supported by the Y or the V of a tree branch, hihi
Nicely done!
I've done dozens of Cobra 29's over the years, and was always partial to 2SC1969 finals. However, I recently got the opportunity to work on the following FACTORY MOSFET'ed Galaxy transceivers:
- Galaxy DX-98VHP which has three (3) IRF-520's (1 as a driver and twin finals) driving an...
Now that figures.... THANKS! In that case, it's probably a pretty hot receiver.
Besides TenTec & Elecraft, is/are there any other amateur transceivers born & bred in the U.S.?
Too bad it doesn't have dual receive.... I'm still partial to the K3 or the Icom 7600 so far.
Thanks DTB, you are the man! Thanks to you and Moleculo, I was able to do some audio mods and then wound up replacing the resistor/cap 'swing mod' at JP36 with the jumper back in place.
I wound up doing the following audio and AMC mods:
- Changed C71 (20 uF 10VDC) electrolytic with a 33...
"Ladies & Gentlemen...... let's get ready to r*mble...."
In this corner, we have the returning heavyweight AM/SSB champion of the world, a (1990's?) side mic Cobra 148GTL. TX section consists of a 2SC2166 driving a 2SC1969. Mods include: resistor mods for increased audio output on TX, volted...
I wonder if the 141 dB blocking dynamic range compensates for the 0.5 uV SSB sensitivity?
Otherwise, it's deaf as a post in a world where we have Japanese radios posting 0.13 - 0.15 uV sensitivity all day long.
I think my Cobra 148GTL is 0.25 uV on SSB and cost me 1/20th what this TenTec...
Nice work! And (especially), if you increased 1-2 S units on ground wave (or LOS), then you've GOT IT!... don't touch a thing.... enjoy the results!
As long as you can effectively couple power to the antenna and as long as it survives your local weather, you've improved your station's...
Good question; I suppose that the 'strength' of a true MOXON (2 ele version) lies in it's superior front-to-back ratio, coupled with it's reduced size relative to a 2 element yagi, and it's 50 ohm match to standard coaxial cable with no need for matching.
I 'think' that if you extend a MOXON...
+1. Also, at any local club or hamfest you're bound to run into an 'Elmer' (one who will take u under his or her respective 'wing' and help you along the life-long process.) My Elmer(s) is/are/were (among many others) the Late Great Joe Hellman - W2YY (of CQ and OSCAR fame), Hank Stetson -...
More like.......
BLONDES, BRUNETTES, REDHEADS................
Honestly though, depends on what you want to do.
For SSB (only) use, it's hard to beat a late model Icom, Kenwood or Yaesu.
For AM (only) use, it's hard to beat any of the "AM Audio Monsters" like properly set up...
I believe the rectangular shape and spacing are what provide the two factors which make the Moxon superior to most other two element antennas, namely:
1. Superior F/B (front to back) ratio: for rejecting signals off the rear of the antenna
2. 50 ohm direct match for coaxial cable feed at...
No, they are NOT daisy chained, rather series/parallel (there is another thread within the forums here which shows how to make the discrete component)
For the JP36, it's a simple (I hate this term... "swing-kit") made from a cap & a resistor. If I had a digital camera I'd take a pic for you...
+1,
@ Turbine Divinity....
Yep the manual (available @ CBTricks.com) is a good place to start, but you will need to experiment with different values of capacitance when doing a mosfet conversion.
UPDATE: SWAPPED IRF-510 FOR IRF-520
Received a substantial quantity of of IRF-520's today. Swapped one into the Cobra 29 in place of the IRF-510.
As I thought, no difference in power output.
IRF-520 merely is capable of dissipating more power but offers no additional gain in the current...
Those are my thoughts EXACTLY, but Jazzsinger has dealt with a genuine guy in the U.K. who has provided genuine parts.
I saw a couple of videos of his work on eBay and he apparently knows what he's doing, but always nice to know "who" you can trust.
I just couldn't resist....
After reading all the hoopla about MOSFETs, I just had to try one in my Cobra 29.
I used to build some serious Cobra 29's using 2SC1969's, 2SC1307's, 2SC2312's, etc.... but it was a LOT of work to properly volt the final in order, get the audio chain and...
