I know some "huntin" (hunting/trapping/running deer/bear/bobcats) guys that use the marine hts while they are out in the boonies. They opted for them because of the tx range I imagine. No doubt they will probably never be bothered by the fcc or anyone looking to turn them in. I planted the ham...
Jonlevy73, don't know yet. I live next to a lake but haven't heard any chatter yet. It might be that the antenna is not really capable of RXing that low of a freq very well. Any one know how close you need to be to pick up chatter from "the standard" fixed in marine radio on a boat?
Ha! That is what the other guy is probably thinking too!
To clarify, the beeping is coming from the speaker just while receiving and not while transmitting? Does it sound like the keypad beeps when entering in frequency or a different beep?
The battery indicator on the radio is not very good. The one that indicates the battery status when the radio is off (and charging) is a little better than the one that displays when the radio is on. Charge it for a night with the stock wall charger and it will be good for about 8 hrs, they come...
I'll bite... I'm a noob at this though.
There probably is an easier radio to learn on, but if you want the 8r go for it. I learned on a 2m AA battery radio shack radio first which was pretty basic http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/425 but not very easy to use, and then got the opportunity to...
The 8r has preprogrammed into it all of the marine band memories. You can access these by pushing "Function", then "SP Bank" secondary key, and finally hitting the "Band" key until you see the "INTVHF" memories.
My question is, can these frequencies be transmitted on via this memory mode...
The standard battery is a backup battery now too. Looks like you have about 20+ hrs of operation now. BTW, the cd-41 cradle can charge the battery without the radio attached.
So how long did it take to get it back after you sent the radios into Vertex? I am waiting for a good time to send mine in because it "pops" every few button clicks when the RX Save feature is On.
Very cool. If you end up integrating an external amplifier I would definitely like to hear about it. Curious about the other antenna you wanted to put on there, what one was it? And if you do decide for another antenna what one will it be, are you interested in the 6m capability or just 2m &...
Just tried this. It is not possible to clone a MARS/CAP mod radio with a regular unmodified radio using Yaesu's CT-134 cloning cable. Regardless of what is programmed in memory of either radio. See VX-8R man pg 135.
Yaesu VX-8r mod - first on the internet!
Just did the mod to the second...
Probably did not undo the mod, I've reset mine a few times already. If it is the same mod the rest of us did, moleculo's howto,

Push the "Band" key to change bands, then hit Func key and...

I looked around a little in the forums for something like this, if this is a duplicate thread please delete it. This is what I am planning on doing the VX-8R. Check it out, tell everyone what your "Memory Band Plan" is, you might have a good idea that others might like to know about. I am...
Skips over, but you can program over the top of the masked freq too. It is pretty easy to fat finger (thumb) that func key and add in a few extra memories where you don't want them. This is the alternative to reseting the radio's microprocessor if you can't handle those mistake memories.
I couldn't figure this out until I saw this,
Pg 54 in the manual. Masking... duh.
Or you could reset the radio, Pg 134, but that gets rid of everything. Unless you are programming in memories, menu item 54 Memory Protect will save you the head ache of goofing up the 999+ memory spaces...
I can't tune to below 1.8MHz and was wondering if it was my radio or this data sheet.
Just push "Band" button on the keypad to cycle through bands. The lowest one I can hit is 1.8 - 30 MHz. Is there another way to get to it? Is that the AM music radio frequencies or something?
