I used a quarter-wave whip and an HR-2510 as my 10M mobile setup for a number of years. Worked a lot of DX with the arrangement, and with just 25w to it the antenna did most of the heavy lifting.
This data used to be available in Popular Electronics magazine back in the late 70's and very early 80's.
Cobra 2000/148, Uniden Grant/Madison...anything built on that particular double-conversion platform got very good reviews, especially where adjacent-channel rejection was concerned.

Don't know how much RAM/CPU you have on your system but you may wish to look into installing VMWare Player then creating an XP virtual machine. Give it about 1GB of RAM to work with and install all of your Windows-based software within.
