Reaching out beyond 100 miles with VHF/UHF

Probably in more ways than either of us know.

RX signal comparison: 710 vs. 6a

Yes, I don't know for sure if either radio was set to "narrow" or "wide". I since reset both readios, so I'm not sure how either was set. I'm assuming they were both set at their factory default settings, whatever that is likely to be. Even thought the HT is 1/4 the size of the mobile unit...

RX signal comparison: 710 vs. 6a

Not yet, but I'll do that. I should probably ask the operator of that net and repeater since the feeling here is that it is an odd frequency.

RX signal comparison: 710 vs. 6a

Whatever thing they were doing, both radios were on that frequency, both were receiving a strong signal, the HT had a lot of noise along with it and the mobile didn't.

RX signal comparison: 710 vs. 6a

I had both radios receiving the same net on the same frequency at my base station last night to compare their reception audio. The S meters on both indicated a strong signal. The signal is from a repeater a little over a mile away. The 710's signal was crystal clear hooked up to a J-pole...

    Newbie Questions

Here is a handy guide to FRS and GMRS radios by Best Buy. There is a difference between the two types. One you need a license for; the other you don't. These are simpler to use than the F6. No ham license required to transmit, either. But eventually you will want your ham license to get...

    Headphones

I've had the Grado SR-60 for 15 years or so - very highly rated for an "economy" phone. Recently got a Sennheiser 170 wireless. Love them. I can wander all over the house listening to MP3s, Pandora, Savage. Just now set it up to use with the Kenwood. I have the audio from the Kenwood...

What is best way to attach a long wire to an HT?

Thanks for the techy name for that gizmo. I found a place in Washington state called Vetco Electronics to get that gizmo for $6.93, plus a 10 pack of alligator clip leads for $5.99. Why the alligator clips? Besides needing 2 of them, they have a $9.50 min. order requirement - otherwise...

What is best way to attach a long wire to an HT?

Has anyone tried the above WinRadio Balun long wire adapter? Does it have any benefit for "receive only" use, or is it primarily designed to accomplish a 50-ohm load for TX?

What is best way to attach a long wire to an HT?

I hope the 20db attenuation on the Kenwood is adequate. From the F6 Manual: "The attenuator function is useful when exremely strong signals exist nearby your receiving frequency. When these type of signals are present, the receiver gain control may be erroneously controlled and overloaded...

What is best way to attach a long wire to an HT?

Absolutely correct! But which kind? There are dozens. I have not seen one that provides for a single 18 to 22 gauge wire connection, soldered or otherwise. By the way, your signature is absolutely and sadly on target.

What is best way to attach a long wire to an HT?

I have a Kenwood F6A wide band HT that I would like to hook up to a long wire. The antenna connector on this unit is an SMA female. I also have an SMA to BNC adapter for it for alternate radio-mounted antennas. What is the best way to securely hook up a long wire to this type of radio (of...

Yeah, I like the 72 - it's one of the few HTs that has a USB jack on it. Saves A LOT of hassle.

Reaching out beyond 100 miles with VHF/UHF

Ah haaa! This is the answer to the question: "Why do hams drive around in 20-year-old trucks and live in shacks?" Too much invested in what they've built..

    Kenwood TH-F6A programming software confirmation

Well, it looks like I'm making a shift to the RT Systems USB cable and programming software. I guess I'm rather fickle when it comes to technology I'm not comfortable with. The serial/USB converter I ordered would probably be touch and go - it might work - it might not - so I am told. So I'm...
