So it begins, I am now on the road to putting the galaxy back together enough to try it out. I was out puttering in the workshop this morning listening to the early bird old folks that get on channel 2 first thing in the morning, nice group of guys, bunch of locals, one lives about 7 blocks from...
spelling is ovur8ed. wut with txting, its all lol and stuff, who needs real wurds?
but on a more serious note it's a double "A" great box, and works with volts. I guess I gotta get me some of them volts.
I did dial back my mic gain and it didn't change anything, But I can turn it back more, I will try that again (or more rather). I do not have a powered mic, its pretty much a stock mic I think.
ok question: I hit a contact tonight less than 1/8th mile away, and he says I was really crackly and spattery, he was kind enough to record it and play it back for me. it sounded like crap. really crunchy, like I was talking through a bowl of rice crispies, the first few words were only a...
I was just dubbing around and headed out to the shop to fiddle with a few things, and clicked on the cb just to listen. channel 19 was the usual trucker chatter from the highway nearby, so I decided to scroll through the channels heading downward I crossed channel 9 (which is always dead) there...
Just snagged a union model US-800 for free don't know if it works but if it does is this one any good at all, or should I not bother taking the trouble to rig up power and speaker and antenna to this thing? It is missing the rear power harness so I would have to rig up some thing to make it...
Definitely some interesting tech to follow. they obviously have a "working" device only time will really tell if they can hold up for the long haul, or even be manufactured cheap enough to make it a viable alternative for any but the richest corperations.
picture if it works out and they can...
Stopped home for lunch, nice for a change. I picked up two books from the library this morning "All about ham radio by Harry Helms AA6FW" and "The beginners handbook of amateur radio third edition, by Clay Laster W5ZPV" just glanced at the first one a bit, it seems super remedial but I am going...
so at this point I know 2 things. I need a little screw to attach the first loose object, the band PCB (circuit boad # EPT004410Z)
and then to find some steel out in my shop to make a suspension bracket for the frequency counter ( part EPT210014C)
after that I guess I'll have to wing it a...
I probably don't have all the gear to align it, but I am more than willing to use a shop for something like that. but for getting it up and running I would like to be the DR.Frankenstein that resurrects this old beast.
Thanks for the service manual Link that is going to be unbelievably...
This may sound crazy but if its fixable, I'm hoping to be the one that fixes it. its just in my nature. I have to appropriate soldering tools for the job and some experience soldering and repairing circuitry. That's the fun of a hobby like this, learning absolutely everything I can involving it...
Image of the cut wires..
The other wires coming off that harness go to
Red: AM/FM/USB/SSB knob
Orange: different location on AM/FM/USB/SSB knob
black: runs to the Band select knob
larger black with tiny white combined wire runs to position (hard to read but I think its) C107 on the main...
Ok here we go with some pictures.
in photo one this is one piece that just flopping loose in the Galaxy d88HL I have founde where it mounts it was pretty much a no brainer there is a little clip about 3/4 of the way back on the left side, just missing a screw.
second photo holding it...
I should be able to get some pictures of the galaxy's guts that are hanging out tonight.. we weathered the storm alright up here but its been crazy cutting up downed trees. I didnt even lose power here but there are still tons of people without power all over our state.
I'll look into the galaxy a bit in the near future. maybe tommorrow, I actually have a full day off for the first time in months, one in which I am not obligated to "go help" some one do some thing that is exactly like what I do for work.
plus with the storm I should be holed up all day.
Edit...
yeah I have heard pretty much nothing but good things about them so I am not disappointed about getting it. I just need to figure out a more long term goal for my base then I can work on going mobile. I don't care if my mobile is straight AM CB. but for my base I want all the bells and whistles.
