Can someone explain why nobody uses upper sideband?

In 1962, when I upgraded from Novice to Conditional class (General taken by mail), I'd usually get up well before leaving for high school and see what was going on on 15 meter CW. Didn't have an AM or SSB transmitter and didn't want one; CW was fun. Then I'd cautiously move up to 10 meters and...

More often than not, this is the answer to adjacent channel/frequency interference.

RCI Ranger 2950: No more modulation on AM and SSB

If you have a carrier when you key the mike, you know the RF portion of the transmitter is likely okay. Learn Morse code and use it on CW!

    Bird meter

Your Bird doesn't care WHAT is producing the RF being measured. As long as the slugs are for the proper frequency range and power level (and everything, including the slugs, is calibrated), the Bird will speak the truth, within ±5% or so.

    knight kit t 60

If you only have the one crystal for 3535 kHz, there's no use worrying about using a mike. Turn the transmitter on, connect a dummy load and a key and see if there's any output in CW mode.

    Antenna height questions

I operated /MM on Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). The ham/MARS station was under the forward end of the angled deck; the port-most compartment on the ship. Right outside there was a catwalk that once served as access to a couple of verticals. The low-wings on the F-4s made relocating those antennas a...

    Maco 5000 high SWR

What are you using to measure VSWR? Try disconnecting the antenna end of the coax and attaching a KNOWN GOOD dummy load that has the same impedance as the coax. What's wrong with a 1.2:1 VSWR?

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

If you've ever seen the movie "Divergent", wherein Chicago is where the "Non-Divergents" are imprisoned, you can see that array of towers in at least one scene. In the distance, it looks like a really serious fence. As I was pointing it out to my wife I heard voices in the audience: "There it...

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

If you have Google Earth, find Pripyat (it's where the ill-fated Chernobyl power station was/is located.) If you look about 5-1/2 miles south of Chernobyl, you'll see a straight line running about 45 degrees (with North at the top). This is the antenna system, or what remains of it, from the...
