BJ, A 4-1000 type amplifier is very nice, I do agree with you. (There's always a BUT though, right?) Here's the 'but'. How easy can you find a decent 4-1000 tube anymore? I haven't looked so have no idea. Paul

If you're going to modify an SB-220, the first thing is to beef up the power supply, it's barely adequate as is. You can (or used to) start with a separate chassis and transformer (P.Dahl!). Some got really ambitious and added two more tubes in that empty part of the original chassis. Not for...

    Quick reference chart for noobs

Something to keep in mind with any 'band plan' is that it's only a -suggestion-, it isn't 'written in stone' by any means. If you want to know what you can/can't do read that Part-97, it tells you all of it. I've seen some real 'bloopers' in the ARRL's plans... Paul

If you really want something to do close to 1500 -2000 watts with AM, start thinking about 3 to 4 times that output power capability. A 572 tube, unless you have around a dozen of them, will never get close. You might also start thinking about how unrealistic most power out put claims are with...

    About the MFJ 1026...

I'm not familiar with that '1026'. The old one they used to make had to be tuned/adjust to, get rid of any noise. I'm assuming you've done that. If so, then I would have to think that there may be something wrong somewhere. Don't ask me what, I have no idea, sorry.

INTERMITTENT DROP-DOWN ON RECEIVE SONAR FS 2340

I think I'd find the relay that pre-amp works through and clean/replace it.

need Ideas for Omni directional antennas for 144/440 and 23cm

If you want lots of 'gain' or 'range', pick an antenna that can cover the bands in question and get LOTS of height. An antenna for indoor use isn't going to do much better than the rubber duck that comes with most HTs. A simple 1/4 wave antenna will do well if you get it high enough (although...

You might hang on to it for a while, you may need it for something else. Paul

MY IMAX 2000 ON NON PENETRATING ROOF MOUNT

I'm sure you know already but getting it out away from that tree wouldn't hurt anything. I also don't think I'd expect too much improvement after getting all the suggestions done. I'm sure therre will be some improvement but not a huge one. Have fun.

Is this what receive alignment means ?

Does the filler fluid really cost you that much? It takes about a gallon of mineral oil, that isn't that expensive...

    SSTV and the ISS

I don't have the required cables to make a 'hard-wired' connection between computer and radio. That means I used the radio's speaker held next to the computer's microphone to get the signal to the SSTV program. Lots of ambient noise, wind, sneezing, coughing, muttering about what a pain it is...

Not bad considering how I was having to do it. Two passes, last one over Nebraska. <--Pass 2 <--Pass1

    Base Double Extended Zepp

Run ladder line all the way and add a balun in front of that tuner and it'll take care of that 'imbalance' problem. If you have a fairly 'broad' tuner you can make it work just dandy.

Is this what receive alignment means ?

A 'clarifier' is a means of shifting the received frequency slightly to better understand a transmitter that isn't on the same frequency you are. It's the same as a 'RIT' (receiver incremental tuner) on ham radios. If the clarifier is 'locked', meaning that the transmit frequency is fixed...

    AMERITRON AL 84

Before you get too enthused, you might check the price, and availability, of the tubes. As for price, I think something from $200 - $300 would be fair, sort of. I'm a fan of Ameritron amplifiers, but not 30 year old ones, especially if they've been modified. Sorry. Paul

    Proper Ferrite choke diameter?

Another trick that may be helpful is to use coax as the speaker lead(s), grounding that shield via the speaker jack in the radio. That 0.001 cap from center to the shield won't hurt either... nor those ferrites. Use smaller coax, that LMR400 would be the pits as a speaker cable.

New to Ham, Need some help

If you're still monitoring this... What will your purpose for this radio be, band / mode / etc? I would think that a vertical antenna would probably work okay. A typical 'rubber-duck' antenna something on the order of an 'electrical' 1/4 wave length. It's easy to make that into a '1/2 wave'...

talking local on 20 and 40 meters..

Having used low antennas most of my radio career, I take most of this 'NVIS' stuff as a justification for a particular antenna or as an excuse. When talking about antenna height you don't 'think' in feet or yards, you think in terms of wave length at the frequency in question. Then you can...
