For the most part conditions up here have been pretty good. There's the odd day with less DX than normal but mostly it's been great. South, Northeast and Southeast US booming in almost every day with tons of Texas, Florida, Gulf Coast, Carolinas, Indiana, Illinois, New Jersey, New England etc...

Have you tried another mic? A lot of these kind of problems are caused by mic issues, usually with either the switch, cable, or plug. Try a different mic and then let us know if it is still having problems..... Is transmit without audio on both AM and sideband?

For skip work there is no point in going higher than 36 feet unless you have objects such as buildings that the antenna needs to "see" over the top of. For local, the higher the better! Raising an antenna 20 feet will be roughly equivalent to doubling your power. So to answer your question...

I'm surprised you need a fan on that radio. It's the same circuit inside as the Anytone 5555N2. I have that Anytone version and I can yak all day on sideband at 60+ watts PEP and while the heatsink does get hot, it's never too hot to touch and there's no power loss even when it does heat up...
