5/8 wave antenna worked the best for me with a good ground plane to get nice gain, if space is limited a good 1/2 wave will do and you don't need a ground plane but gain will be less.

On the 980, shouldn't the first step be to check the bias voltage on the finals, should be around 3.8 volts. Then go on from there. Try to get a $5 radio from a garage sale and practice on that first. Also watch a lot of YouTube videos from different people to get a feel for the 980. Good luck!
I have been using the original K40 since the 70's, the newer K40 bases and the replacement assemblies are a clear plastic (I guess to see the cap???). Not as strong as the older ones, so if gets dropped or banged the plastic can crack.
You might think it was a new radio, it could have been a return!!! If you plan on holding onto it, get the service manual and start with the align steps.
