the USA is so deeply in debt to China i believe China no longer sends the good products to the USA and we now get the dreck the rest of the world dont want to buy, you can thank the US Gov and their decades of deficit spending that put this nation in 15 trillion dollars in debt for that
Maco Antennas work great until a winter ice & snow storm or high winds tear them apart, the aluminum tubing is too thin on Maco's Antennas so they dont last long
Robb you may very well be right about the voltage problem, if that mic requires 9V then 8 will be starving it and electronics do not do well under starvation conditions.
thanks for the input :)
yup, thats what i was wanting to do = open the mic, take out the battery, and cut the batter terminal plug and run the hot/red wire to the pin 4 wire for the 8+ volts and the black to the shield (ground)
this pin shows to have 8 volts DC in it, and since the 2950DX does not really need a receive wire on it in order to receive i was thinking of taking the wire that goes to pin 4 and re-purposing it to power an astatic road devil power mic (making the 9volt battery unnecessary)

i been wanting one of those TS50 Kenwood for a long long time, i keep a few hundred stashed back for an opportunity to buy one, one of these days i am going to run across one in a hamfest and i will grab it
if i had my way i would encourage manufacturers to make full RX/TX mods to be as simple as moving or removing those little black jumper plug thingys
1. Remove the cover from the unit and locate 6 pin jumper labeled J29. Move the shorting block from it's current position to the back/right...
if i had a thousand bucks to blow on radio junk?
i would wait for a local hamfest and look for a boat anchor and haggle the price down as best as i could...
and then visit my local hardware store and buy a couple of 500 foot rolls of #10 stranded copper wire and build a 160 meter loop
dont underestimate state owned prison factories in china.

you see those itty bitty walkie talkies in walmart or any BigBox store for about 30 bucks a pair? they are so low powered and just cheaply designed and manufactured they hardly work for more than a block, i think the specs should be bumped up to about like a CB radio = 4 watts and an external...
i know this is an old thread but i will say this anyone just for posterity:
i always just turn the RF Gain knob back to about 10 Oclock or close to that when the skip or noise is strong...
i also heard that plasma TVs will make awful RFI on CB and HF ham radios
Not mentioned is the Uniden Bearcat 980 with SSB with the same design scheme, yup those are some nice looking radios, I may buy the 980 and see how it does on an A99, with all those tricked out export radios running high power on 38 LSB I probably wont have much of a chance to make many contacts...
