I guess some of the posters didn't read the above statement. With that said, check out an Ameritron ALS-600. Quiet, cool, no-tune...
Remember, 300W in relation to 100W will only yield a little over a half an S-unit increase in signal strength (doubling power output equals 3 db. or 1/2...
Sounds like you lucked out, 'MIG. I don't have any experience with Iota, either, but a number of switching power supplies I've tried create a nasty noise that's present on a few different bands. Some good, some bad, I guess...
I've used it in a pinch -- never again. Speaking of pinch, those crimp-on connectors are total junk. Ya get what'cha pay for...
Belden 9913F7: the only way to fly.
Nice job in answering the guy's questions, Doc & Sparky.
Now, how many Kenwoods could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck Kenwoods?
Inquiring minds want to know...
I had the 30W version back in the '80's, and I really liked it. Mine was "opened up" and worked great on both 11m and 10m. One afternoon on the way home from work, I talked with a station in Japan on 10m FM -- simplex!
Honestly, I cannot recall any drawbacks of the rig. I wish I still had...
Thanks for the heads-up. I participated in this event years ago, and it's pretty cool.
Guys, just remember to make sure you don't transmit on their frequencies! Watch your VFO's!
I agree. It's difficult to get many, if not any, ham rigs to sound "loud and proud." I'm not referring to typical overmodulation, distortion, and general crappiness sometimes associated with big audio 11 meter rigs that have been butchered, either... just good ol' Browning-type audio...
Welcome aboard, Stan! Your radio history sounds interesting, and it's always good to hear from fellow CB'ers who got in the game back in the 60's and 70's. Those were the days...
You should really like the IMAX 2K. Mine works great from about 26 to 28 MHz.
7-thirds!
Obviously, I'm referring to the portion of the band where the new regulations were enacted: 7.1 to 7.2. The remainder of the band had no such regulatory changes and is, therefore a moot point.
A dual band GMRS/MURS antenna sounds interesting, although I've never used one.
Generally, I would say that MURS would offer more range per Watt (not taking into account a GMRS repeater) over GMRS. Also, I would think there would be more of a possibility of tropo band openings on VHF MURS...
Very astute observation, Sparky! That is indeed the reason for my "tidbit of radio brilliance" (as you put it).
Wire Weasel, I've got to hand it to you; the RF Barf explanation is great!
