I agree......I have a Maco Comet up~30 ft. and have DXed the West coast, North,(Michigan,Wisconson,Canada, ect.) Southern states as well, and I'm down in a "hole" surrounded by mountains (Eastern Tennessee)
I agree, even if it has "HD" on the front...20-25 d/k is still to high. That "HD" on those cheaper amps are often misleading and confusing (as in high d/k? or high swing/PEP?) I'd run the Lee on the low setting, with the amp on.
It was....I tried my best not to laugh only because she had an attitude like "don't even tell me how to shoot a gun" although I didn't realize she could fast dance that well. :D
I was~15 when a friend let me shoot his 30'06, I had no clue about the recoil and was nearly touching the scope with my eyebrow. I pulled the trigger and it felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat, then I felt a trickle down my cheek. Yep...scope cut, valuable lesson learned.
Several years ago, my ex-wife was shooting my 303 British Enfield (with the brass buttplate on stock) left handed. As she started to pull the trigger, I stopped her and told her that she'd better put it on her shoulder better (you had to see how she had it to appreciate what I mean) she told me...
I'm glad you got it going! Remember....everyone starts from the begining. I started in radio when I was 15, started tinkering when I was 17 (now 47) I learned alot from some good Ham operators and continue to learn to this day. There is a wealth of knowlege here and when I run into a dead end on...
Good info, Nomad. Also SK, if you haven't already done so, check close where the pills are bolted in place....feel for high spots where the bolts pulls up the soft aluminium (I believe this was shown in a total rebuild in the forum) I did a "Palomar" 250 about a year ago that was getting hot...
I repaired one not to long ago that sounds similar to what you have. After un-bolting the pills, I found a trace burned apart, after fixing the trace everything was working. It may not be the problem with yours, but worth a look, as those traces are very thin and it don't take much to cook em'...
I just wanted to add, if you don't already know, don't beleve the old "put the end of the coax in a glass jar and you will be protected" thing. Lightning+glass jar=Lightining+glass exploding in your room. I cringe every time I hear someone say they're putting thier coax in a "pickle jar"
I found the problem, I took the board out (again) and on closer inspection I found cracks around the solder joints, at the slide controll. After resoldering, it works perfect now. I wanted to share this in hopes that it helps anyone that has the same problem. 73's....Pluto.
I use a Maco Comet because of space limitations, and am very pleased with it. I use a TV type rotator and so far (going on 6 months) so good. The others mentioned before me are good choises also. 73s....Pluto.
I hear ya on the moblemax and good luck on support from Astatic (schematics, ect.) I'm still hoping that someone has one out there that I can actually read. Take care, Pluto.
If I remember right, the Connex/Galaxy echo boards uses an 8 volt supply. So you might want to add a resistor inline on the 12 volt supply to bring it down to~8 volts. I've seen people use 12-13 volts....but I believe 8 is correct. 73's, Pluto.
