As has been said a sat phone is your best bet. If you want to travel with ham gear then you want a general class license and use HF. VHF and UHF will be mostly useless.
It was called "First class comerical" license but changed to what you have here in the early '80s, just after I got my first class ticket. I was grandfathered in.
I have always had good luck with ham-sticks. Before I went with the screwdriver I ran a 20 meter ham-stick with an LDG tuner for the other bands. It worked well and I was happy with it.
