And now for something completely stupid. The Tweety Bird noise toy.

Slightly off-topic but still noise toy related: Anyone remember the TI SN76477 sound effects chip? Used in a LOT of video games of the 70s and early 80s. I still have one in my junk box. One of the electronics mags of the period had a noise toy construction article. I played around with the...

Tram D201 Transmit starting and stopping?

How familiar are you with troubleshooting - specifically, tube PA circuits? For starters, have a look at all voltages involved with the final. Specifically, screen grid and plate. Be careful. Are any of these dipping as you transmit? And when looked at via scope, are they clean, stable and free...

And now for something completely stupid. The Tweety Bird noise toy.

Seems the CA3045/3046 is available in SOIC as well as DIP. Might be a little more life left in it.

Old School vs New School CBs: Which do you like ??

The best way I can describe DSP artifacts is that it sounds like you're talking under water. Very low levels of DSP filtering (just enough to remove the most bothersome background noise) aren't that objectionable. Get more aggressive with the filtering and it's definitely noticeable.

    Hot Air & desoldering soon.

What I do is apply some with the solder pencil of my rework station, hit the part with hot air (lower temp than required to melt 60/40 or similar solder) or use a Thermo-Tweez handpiece with the appropriate tips. After the part is removed, flux and clean pads with a Sodr-Xtractor, melt some...

    Different base station.

There are base consoles listed for sale on the auction site from time to time. For what they are, they fetch $tupid money. Yours looks good.

Chip Quik is your friend. What type of hot air station do you have? Nozzle size?

Apologies to our friends in the UK

I try to keep those frequencies in the memories of any receiver that's capable of storing and scanning them. Have heard traffic a few times over the years but none in English. Another favorite thing was monitoring 27540 for packet radio transmissions. I had many megabytes of those exchanges...

Old School vs New School CBs: Which do you like ??

I like radios with good sensitivity and adjacent channel rejection. What I've mentioned (with the exception of the Royce rigs) were at the top of the heap "back in the day". Check out the JRC NRD/NSD-515 twins. Same philosophy as the Browning and Demco twins. If JRC would have offered a type...

    Any Airband Enthusiasts?

This reply is going to get a bit convoluted. So bear with me. If you're monitoring a handful of known frequencies there are many options to choose from. Searching the entire air band - especially the UHF Mil allocation - gets into some specialized hardware, software and techniques. There are 4...

    Trip Down Memory Lane

I had such a gig right out of high school (when the "boom" was in full swing). It got one invited to lots of interesting places, parties and whatnot - and was (to keep things polite) a license to print girlfriends at times. Fast forward to nowadays, and being a guru in things PC: You can't pay...

    Trip Down Memory Lane

I ran mine (2510) mobile in the early 90s with a 1/4w whip on the bumper. Worked Africa and Europe on the way to work; AP on the way home. The occasional trip south put the vehicle in the right orientation to work LATAM. Never bothered to send the cards in but DXCC was like shooting fish in a...

    Trip Down Memory Lane

I have the whole stack: HR-2510 HR-2600 Original Lincoln HTX-100 One of these days I'm going to fire up my CAD program, design a set of side plates to mount 1, 2, 3 or 4 of them then send the files off to a laser cutter for a set of each. We have "President's Day" on our local 10M net from...
