I have a few of those radios. One behaves like the one you have. I did start to recap the radio section by section, but still no luck. There is one part of the board I still need to recap, but I worked on the radio about 5+ years ago. Someday I will run into it again. :)

If you got plenty of trees, maybe a dipole antenna would work for ya? I use a 1:1 balun that I bought a few years ago and it worked pretty good. Otherwise, may as well get that A99 setup the way you were thinking.

The Courier Gladiator I have needs some TLC. I got one back in 2017 or so and it was dead in the water. No audio. Fast forward to recently, I took it off the shelf and will be the next radio I try to fix. I replaced some capacitors years ago and the radio just kept making a poping sound...

I always found the UV-5R's modulation very low. There is a mod to increase that and make it so one doesn't have to yell into the radio. Baofeng UV-5R Modulatino Mod

Only thing that comes to mind that it may be the transistor in the back of the radio near the power connector. You can use a TIP42 in place of it. Unsure if that only deals in AM and not the SSB side of things. Even if it doesn't fix it, it is a good idea to replace it from what was there...

Honestly.... I can see this being my wife's next CB radio. She wanted something very compact to fit in her 2017 Civic. She has a Uniden 980 SSB but not currently installed.

I have lost count how many times that song played in the 1990s lol.

I have 3 of the TS-830S radios. Two work, the 3rd one was part of a trade I did with a friend last year. VOX works and will put the radio into transmit, but no audio ever makes it to the finals... :( Project for another time.
