Friend of mine passed away about a month ago , (May he rest in peace) got a call from his executor and my friend had left me his Messenger M4V (1 MRF 455 driving 8 x MRF 455s) . He had it in one of his cars over 25 years ago and not for very long . Well kept in a box for all those years ...
The amp has been this way since I got it a year or so ago , Driving the amp with a Grant XL AM=2 to 18 , SSB=18 pep . The amp carriers 4 x MRF 454s , using a run of the mill MFJ - 870 and a Cantenna 1k dummy load . The Max side of amp looks good at 75 to 280 pep . it's the other settings on...
This amps the same as the Cobra 450XL and the Magnum (same maker) This one carriers 4 x Motorola SRF 3795s (80 watt devices) They say it's a hard drive but I've never driven it harder then a Uniden Grant XL AM/SSB . About a watt and a half (1.5 swinging 16 pep AM and the same 16 on SSB) amp on...
Just wondering why this load would read 58 ohms ? The mineral oil is clean as can be , took the top off and it still reads 58 ohms ? I know there was never much more then 500 watts pep put through it. I just don't know that much about DL's other then there supposed to read 50 ohms . Thanks
Lost a really good friend and radio operator 2 weeks ago on Sunday evening , Mike D. out of Anaheim , Orange County Ca. . Mike was a moderator for the World Radio and Needle Bender groups for many years . A good man and very dedicated to his causes . I talked to Mike for getting on 20 years on...
Was just wondering if or how one of these might be helpful behind a Texas Star DX500 in your vehicle ? What would I look for concerning the size I might need ? and how are they even hooked up ? The pros and cons if any . Sounds interesting and just was wondering if they could be of help . Thanks SK
Was talking to a guy in DX land in his truck parked in Corpus Christie Texas today. (Rocky 388) Here's the thing , I heard him on both 37 and 40 lsb loud and proud on both frequencies ! He was on 40 lsb , I talked to him for a few minutes and told him I could hear him on both freqs , he said...
I had dropped out of the hobby for about 8 years or so and came back a few years ago . I knew back then that MOSFETS were the growing trend and they seemed a lot cheaper to use and I've still been trying to shake hands with them ever since ? (to have a better understanding of them) I was old...
Rolled the dice and nabbed it for 50.00 shipped . Looks all original to me . On high 12 watts in on SSB 125 pep watts all day , low side about 70 . very clean audio on SSB (none of that snap crackle pop crap from class C ) Seems to like 1 watt on AM with about 16 watts pep swing about 30 DK from...
Was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction on finding a 10 turn pot that would work on a old school 148 GTL's clarifier , one that might fit one way or the other. Much thanks ! Switch Kit
I've heard it said over the years that MRF 454's are a true side band transistor .........Can someone explain to me why this is ? ........are they any truer then the Toshiba's or any other transistors along those lines ? Is there something that makes the MRF 454's special when it comes to SSB...
This radio has been recapped , the power off the dual 1969 transistors is great and the alignment is right on the money . The problem is when you turn the radio on you hear static coming in with the volume turned all the way down with or without antenna or dummy load connected ? As you turn the...
Can't seem to turn the audio down on this one ? in other words , you only need to just crack the mic gain control on AM or SSB using a stock mic ? I really don't know , VR6 doesn't look like it was ever in this radio and there seems to be a jumper across where it would have been . As far as I...
I'm thinking another oldie but goodie ? Face place and switch was caved in and damaged in shipping , was able to change the switch and bend things around and get it going. Was told sounded good on SSB (AB?) and AM ..........single mosfet driven Grant LT , 1 to 20 on AM and 20 on SSB . (no clips)...
The amp has very good SWR's on low and medium power on both antenna and dummy load , the problem is when it's on the high side SWR is in the red ! both on dummy load and antenna ? It's weird because it's very good on the other settings ? Thanks . Switch
Just was wondering if anyone has used one of these and what they thought about it ? I'm surely no amp expert but it looks AB and kind of resembles maybe a older Messenger amp ? I would certainly think it could do a clean 300 watts with 4 x 1446's ? Thanks
Wilson 5K load on a Wilson 1K mag mount (RG58) on a 2 by 3 foot metal table on porch 15 feet off the ground used with a K40 / 58 inch stinger (because it "appeared" to match better then the Wilson's) I'm guessing RF is traveling the outside of the coax because moving wires , radio or coax inside...
It's been a handful of years for me and I'm looking to buy me a brand new radio for a change . (Been out of the loop for a while now) From what I have read both the Q6's & PL2+'s are decent affordable radios . Was just wondering what you guys might think ? or if one is that much better then the...
