I didn't realize you were from Australia. I remember reading that there were only 18 channels allowed there back then, and I remember CPI had their CP-180 model with 18 channels just for Australia.

This may help you, the original Realistic Factory Service Manual for the TRC 458. It's the same radio as the 457 but doesn't have the clock. Also, the TRC 449 manual may help. It was the mobile version of the radio.

If you replace any of the ICs, solder a socket to the board to insert the IC into. This way, you will never have to do any soldering at those points again if the replacement IC needs to be removed again. This prevents damage to the traces and from over heating of the IC while soldering.

In response to your question about C239, there is no cap used in that position on this radio. I think you will find it's not on the schematic or in the parts list.

Make sure you resolder all those pass throughs from the top to the bottom sides of the boards, or you may be chasing problems forever.
