Sorry guys.
As a regular participant (and originator of a few threads) in the Political Junkies section, it's just not worth $15 to debate Highlander over the validity (or invalidity) of U.S. foreign policy.
Even if it was a good debate.
Ciao.
I agree...listening to AM BCB with a 12 kHz filter inline will blow your mind after listening to a steady diet of SSB.
The only problem with synchronous detection is in the truly marginal signal. My Drake R-8 spends more time searching to lock on than anything else. Course, like you said...
Well...you *WILL* get better AM reception on SSB than AM.
It's called listening to only one sideband of signal that has two sidebands and a carrier.
Synchronous detection (locking onto one sideband and injecting your own carrier) is a godsend if done correctly....
If most of your problem is...
A low pass filter? Wow. I've played with a lot of tube amps in my day (homebrew and commercial), and none of them have had low pass filters.
Wonder why??
Oh yeah, if you design and operate a tube amp correctly, it's not needed.
And that most hams who run QRO are well aware that "aaauuuuddddioo" tests are about as scientific as....well....they're not scientific.
Post us some IMD numbers and a screen shot of both amps' RF envelope on a spectrum analyzer at maximum output. Then we'll talk...'kay??
PS. I can make my...
How long have you been around here? Not to toot QRN's horn, but anyone doing this:

Has got my vote for having electrical cajones.
I do both. Make QSOs, listen to other QSOs, and when I'm in a dry spell and don't want to work on the radio, keep myself "fresh" with G4FON's software...even though I can go for months without listening to ANYTHING and just slip back to about 13 WPM. With software refreshers I can roll upwards...
Very pretty!!
I love 4-400s.
Just curious about your RF ammeter. I used to have one in my amp switchover box, but blew the thermocouple (it was an old Westinghouse--no replacement available). What do you use?
The great thing about a Ten Tec is you can always ship it back to the factory in Sevierville, TN (about 100 miles from where I sit right now) and they'll go thru it and make it like new.
Lack of AM would be a deal breaker for me...unless I could pick it up for a good price. And even then, it...
I got FIBER into my house. Dedicated 3 Mbit down 24/7/365 regardless of network traffic, weather, etc. Also supplies my telephone and CATV as well. It's SWEET.
And FWIW, I *wish* Apple could match the price point on a comparable Windows box. If they could, Apple would rule the world. OSX...
I thought the Advanced test was a copper-clad b*tch. Much harder than the Extra.
At any rate. Where are all these new hams, anyway?
4 mainline 2-meter repeaters in the area are still as quiet as a stone. And I can still find a slot to work voice on 80 meters in the evening...
There have been several enforcement actions over the last 3 or 4 years with LPFM "community" radio stations..and they all pretty much go badly for the operators, with hefty NALs handed out.
If you go here http://www.fcc.gov/eb/FieldNotices/ and look at the items label "NOUO"--that stands for...
Post pics of the RF deck...with power on!!!
Re your wife: I'm sure by now she knows you're playing with 3000 volts. And she's a nurse to boot: if she hears a yell after the bang, that usually means you're OK and her services aren't needed. If she hears silence, then you're dead...and her...
Sorry dude, I can't get that impressed with an OS that has less of an incubation time than the American Presidency.
Vista was released just a short while ago...meaning that either Microsoft is holding back on us OR it took less than four years to develop. Not good news.
BTW...isn't it...
I doubt that replacing the equipment is going to make life any easier. As someone else alluded to....we're at the bottom of the solar cycle and conditions have been exceeding bad.
You may need to either change frequencies, modes or schedules to coincide with the best conditions.
If I knew then what I know now....
I wouldn't change a thing.
Kenwood TS450
MFJ 989C roller inductor (If you get a manual tuner, a roller is the ONLY way to go IMHO)
The biggest longest dipole fed with twinlead you can fit.
Ok, maybe I might jump for a Kenwood 850. Definitely would...
