Question about dynamike on Cobra 29

I have an older Cobra 29 LTD. I had it "tuned" years ago, and now I have to set the dynamike down to about half way because it sounds too burbly and distorted at any higher level. I know how it sounds because I have listened to it from the receiving end. When the dynamike is set to about...

    Modified Cobra 29

What does the swr needle say when you transmit? Zero, or off the scale? Just wondering... ok...sorry I see you say the swr is not working. My mistake.

ICOM R-100: Why bother firing it up?

    Thanks for the information, gamegetter.

ICOM R-100: Why bother firing it up?

I have an Icom R-100 scanner, it receives 100 khz to 1856 Mhz. with no blocks. It is 20 years old, it works, but should I bother hooking it up again? I don't know how many signals are digital now, so I don't know if it would be worth my time/money to hook up an antenna. I know that I would...

    Squelch vs. PA speaker?

My voice comes out loud and clear from the front of my car in PA mode. Yes the Cobra 29 LTD has a PA jack. I hooked up a speaker, and can be heard from hundreds of feet away.

My swr changed for no apparent reason.

You are correct, MrSuburban. I pulled the antenna off of the roof of the car, and wiped away all the trapped water from the antenna base and the car. And the swr went right back to where it was originally. A sincere thanks for the information. And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions...

My swr changed for no apparent reason.

I appreciate the responses...especially from Captain Kilowatt and HotRod. I am using the built-in swr meter on the Cobra 29 ltd to test the swr, and it has always worked well. For 15 years, actually. Hotrod suggested an external meter. I don't have a good quality external meter at my...

My swr changed for no apparent reason.

I appreciate the advice, Warlock. Especially the part about "leave it alone". I've stripped threads on antenna screws, just trying to get the swr perfect. So per your advice, I'll let this one ride.

My swr changed for no apparent reason.

I have a Wilson 500 cb antenna on my car and a Cobra 29 ltd radio. I had it adjusted perfectly. It dipped to almost zero movement on channel 20, and on 1 and 40 it was about 1.3. I was so proud of myself for adjusting this thing perfectly. Now I get about a 1.5 on channel 40, and it dips to...

    Squelch vs. PA speaker?

I was wondering if turning down the squelch would affect the output of the PA speaker on a Cobra 129. The owner's manual says that cb activity will be heard on the speaker in PA mode. So if I squelch out the noise, will my voice be as loud? I know, it's a stupid question to you guys but I...

    Transmitting question.

If I transmit on my cb, while on "public address" mode, should I worry about my antenna being connected? I know this sounds stupid, but can I ruin my cb radio if I yell something over the speaker, if my antenna is not hooked up? I don't know if any transmit is going into the radio. Any advice...

Is my powered speaker stealing TX power?

I have my cb radio connected to the same plug as it's amplified speaker (1-into-two cigarette plug). I know that the transmit/receive power draws are supposed to be seperate, but when I transmit: the speaker light comes on...and I can hear my voice faintly coming over the speaker. No doubt...

More and more CB radios turning up at hamfeast.

Reminds me of the old "Hot Wheels vs. Matchbox" fight. They're all die-cast vehicles. And (we?) are all radio enthusiasts. So let it go.

Is my cb ok just left in the car?

Thanks for all the answers, everyone. And to HITEK-REDNEK...I am in Columbus, Oh also. Alot of highways/freeways going by here.

Is my cb ok just left in the car?

Good point...I guess if these sensitive components can handle 120,000 miles of harsh ride and temperature changes, then my radio can also. The stereo still works after ten years...proves your point again.

Is my cb ok just left in the car?

I was wondering if it is hard on the radio itself, being left on it's mount inside the car through winter, summer, etc. I am tired of disconnecting it and taking it inside. It's held on it's mount with just a couple of thumb-screws, but I was just wondering if it is hard on the radio to leave...

    RG-8X vs. RG-8U coax?

Wow...thanks for the answers again. After reading the last few posts, I'll probably go with an 18-ft. length of 213 cable. It's the same price as RG8U for that length. And it's polyvinyl insulated, instead of poly-foam. My setup is far from spectacular: just a tuned Cobra 29 LTD hooked to a...

    RG-8X vs. RG-8U coax?

RG-8U cable is just over .4 inches in diameter, according to a couple of sites that are selling it. That's close to a half inch. I won't be pushing more than about 20 watts through it. But the cable breaking down at over 100 watts? I'll admit that I'm not an expert here, but that seems a...
