You can check the resistor and the speaker while they are inline... All I can think of for a reason for it being there is to limit the volume. So maybe the volume pot has a bad spot in it and it goes to loud...

Radio Shack sells a clamp on toroid designed to be a coax filter. I put one on the coax for my dish just to be safe. I also purchased at radio shack an AC line filter that the power strip plugs into. No problems here. Try those two things and see what you get.
