Psst buy it you know you want it.keep in house it be just fine
Im not an enabler no sir ee
You know it's all your fault ! LOL I bought that $100 980 the next day because I couldn't shake the urge to try it. I took the power cord from my other 980 so I could try it on the way home and couldn't get over how good the NB was but couldn't get a radio check all the way home but could hear distant radios with my little Tram 300 antenna. Just turned it on tonight and the DX is sounding choice on 37 lsb with my Star Duster antenna. But I will say it is the first version 980 so it has that channel change beep. Now I have to figure out which 980 to give to my buddy down the road 7 miles away for a late Xmas present if he wants it. I have to try the new one on a different watt power meter because it is saying a little over 4 watts AM dead key but that might be the meter it is on so have to double check. Anybody remember hearing about turning down the dead key on a 980 ? I can't ever remembering about such a adjustment.

Yes how often do you find a brand new SSB radio for $100 bucks especially one with a good NBer and the Weather band.. I still hate the menu feature but set it and forget it. I haven't found a perfect radio yet and probably never will. Happy DXing ! Oh yes at least the controls are Fat Finger Friendly ! LOL

There is an adjustment I believe on the top-righthand side of the board near the back next to that transformer. Just be very very careful as those small tiny potentiometers can easily break if done wrong. You can turn down that AM deadkey. :) (My wife's 980SSB I have already unlocked the clarifier too. I posted some pictures here when I did it.)

I also removed that small surface mount resistor to eliminate that beep. It got overwhelming after a bit.

Do you have the number of the pot for turning down the dead key because I might consider doing that simple mod. As far as the rest of the mods I bookmarked them in my Uniden folder in my CB folder for future resource info. As I type the 980 has been barking out clear dx on 37lsb for sometime now, almost flawless running thru my West Mountain Radio processor. Thanks for the info !

I looked, and the pot says AM Power next to it. :) You will see it.

Here is that clarifier unlock guide I posted. (On the picture with the two small white wired clipped, ONLY do one.... I was curious if either could be clipped and it still yielded the same results. The video on youtube tried having you remove SMD components on the board which was not needed.

980 SSB Clarifier mod.
I have to laugh because I have too much on my plate at the moment to open the radio up but the solar site said DX was good for 10-12 meters today so had to try the radio out today barefoot with hot activity going on. I made a good contact with East Texas today on 39 lsb and the guy was surprised I told him I was barefoot He said I was sounding good for 3 watts but I didn't tell him my meter said 4 watts. Then I think I made a Oklahoma contact but can't confirm that because it was 37 lsb and really busy. So far it looks like I didn't take it in the shorts buying that radio, but time tells all tales !

Thanks

You are doing great. SSB should be doing its 10+ watts. AM I think it was doing the 4 watts deadkey swinging up to 10. I think bringing down the AM carrier, it does compromise the watts some on the top end, but your amp will be fine with that.

For the sake of, dont keep that radio in extreme heat or cold.... I am wondering if that contributes to the radios that have a failed display.

Now that you mentioned it I think I need to crank up the ALC. You might be right about extreme temp swings and failed displays because my old one has to be 5-6 YO with no problems but it has been in the house most of the times because I was in new radio discovery mode most of the time. LOL

The ALC will set your SSB watts overall. I just put my wife's 980SSB to 10 watts on SSB, then put the AMC so it was doing the 8 watts on AM. AM Power of course I set it to just under 2 watts while no modulation is happening. :)

Fantastic conditions today! Worked Ireland on FM this morning with 120 watts, followed by a dozen or more stations all over the US plus Jamaica. Now there's lots of exotic stuff coming in from the Pacific ring..... Indonesia, Japan, Phillipines, Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Taiwan etc. all heard in the last hour or so on 555 and thereabouts.

Best conditions in a couple months, and first time working Europe since early November.
