It has been a while and amp on owners shelf waiting for a fix now. One of the techs I talked to here and I am sure to not explain it quite right but he said batteries were probably used to put a - voltage to tube grid screen to turn tube off. This way it would draw very little from batteries and would last a long time. Thanks Jimbo
