we have both of these radios. both work well, however, no matter if you use the built in speaker or an external speaker they dont sound all that great on ssb. it almost sounds like theres a dsp running or the filter isnt wide enough. anyone else notice this? is there a cure? biggest downfall of this radio to me
I have read numerous postings about this SSB audio receive problem
in these newer 5555 radios. Bad distorted audio on stronger SSB signals.
and after this:
I have this old 2970 (with the -013 board) that had many problems. it was worked on by others,
sometimes making things worse. (solder blob shorts across circuit traces., etc)
But the last thing I was trying to repair was while in SSB receive, with even a moderate
strength signal, the audio was distorted. The RF gain had to be turned way down
to hear a clean SSB signal.
But clean signals received in AM, and the AGC is working. and in SSB the AGC is working.
I could see the bar graph meter move and also measure the AGC voltage with a
scope at IC1-14, the voltage going up to about 3...
.
the same problem. maybe same solution.
it is easy to tell, with a little O-scope probing.
But the AGC working good on AM receive, and
good audio out on AM receive.
I am thinking that there is not enough carrier re-insertion
in the SSB detector. it will vary from radio to radio.
many work great, and some don't.
check the carrier signal at TP5 (receiving in SSB mode)
add around a 20 pF capacitor across C155 to increase
this carrier level.
I have never touched one of these radios yet, so not sure
how hard it is to probe inside. I know it's SMT stuff.
if someone out there has one of these 5555's that
has this problem, I will be glad to take a look at it.
let me know. I work for fun in my radio room,
and for a little "beer money"
