I am going to give you "the deal" on class of operation when in comes to tubes.

AM and SSB signal reproduction must be linear; RF amplifier tubes are run class AB1 or class AB2 which produces linear output signal.

Tubes in "Always on" service such as RADAR are ran in class A.

Tubes used in Telegraphy service (on and off only when linearity is not important because there is no speech) are ran in class C.

Audio modulator circuits are usually ran in push-pull configuration and are in class B service.
